why is only spanish & english listed as choices
Published May. 21, 2008When I go to the ATM for money, or make a call to about any big business I deal with, why are the machines always giving me choices between English and Spanish?
Why not Swedish, French, German, Asian or African languages. In fact, even the State Employees Credit Union gives a choice. Don't all NC state employees speak English, even those who translate? My phone company always talks to me in Spanish first.
What does the population total have to be of those speaking another language for them to get their language on the machines we speak to?? The blind have a ear plug, but that is another deal, since it is a physical handicap.

In the end, I finally decided that most people use Spanish for money. The banks and businesses stand to make a profit off the Spanish speaking people, so they do what it takes to get their money. Other languages are just not as profitable, so no one "cares" about them. As far as the my university newspaper, they're just desparately trying to appear progressively hip. It's trendy ya know. In the hip trendy liberal world, you're not "cool" unless you kiss latino and black hiney.

Walk up ATM's are required to present Braille in order to comply with the ADA. Since it would be prohibitive to manufacture two versions of ATM machines (one with Braille and one without), it's easier and cheaper to just put it on all of them.
