hey!

for my shelby girl...

Published May. 21, 2008

16 1/2 years ago, I picked you out of a litter of 8 when you were 5 weeks old. I took you back to see your brother when you were a little older. He didn't turn out as great as you did.
Remember him biting the CP&L guy?
The next week I took you for your first boat ride with grandma & grandaddy to Harkers Island.
You had such a blast. Years later we moved to TX (for 3 weeks) and on the ride back to NC we stayed in a Motel 6 for the night in Meridian, MS.
I had gone out for ice and had locked you inside and me out. You were more calm than I was.
There were so many trips to the beach when we lived in Wilmington. You and Hunter played and played all day. Camping out at Fort Fisher watching you swim was the best part for me. You could swim like a fish. You never went to far, because you knew I was scared of the water (and sharks) and wouldn't be able to get you if something happened.
Your daddy always kept a watchful eye over you. Fast forward to hanging out at grandma and granddaddy's condo in Myrtle Beach. All you wanted to do was swim. You didn't even care about the other dogs, just swimming.
Your grandma and granddaddy loved you so much. When you stayed with them they would always give you chicken even though I said not to. I guess that's what grandparents are supposed to do, spoil the granddoggies.
Remember daddy's venison jerky? He'd make you your own bag for treats.

On 5/15/06 we found out you had cancer. Our hearts broke into a million pieces. We decided not to do surgery or chemo because of your age!
Then you were 14 1/2 years old. I started you on Essiac (an herb/vitamin) shortly after that. You didn't have a problem eating it when wrapped in cheese. That still didn't keep us from taking you to your favorite places and visiting your dog and cat friends or your grandma and granddaddy. 2 years went by with no signs of you slowing down.

Last Monday at 3:30 in the morning you told me it was time for you to go. We all miss you so much. I wish you could see the necklace I got for you to put your ashes in, it's beautiful - just like you were. Thank you for being my friend and my protector. You will always be with me.
I love you.

For those of you who have pets, give them lots and lots and LOTS of belly rubs.  Thanks for letting me share this with you.

Please dont cry - I've done enough crying for everyone in the county.  And more tears will come.

What a beautiful tribute to your dear friend & protector. The no tears request could not be honored while reading this. I am so sorry your Shelby girl has passed onto whatever comes next. I choose to believe you will see her again. She was lucky to have found you & you her. Peace be with you.

I swear I need therapy.

Angela, thank you so much for putting my blog on the "list". That was very nice of you.

I appreciate it so very much.

*tears again*

Oh, I am so, so sorry. I'm sitting here crying at my desk, but so glad you had such a wonderful dog and she had you.

What a sad sad story, but Shelby had a gret owner and a good life. I am sorry for your loss. Everyone, this story can also be found in the Ode to Pets section on the wral.com pet page. I would encourage many of you to honor your pet by submitting an ode. I manage that page so I'll be sure to post whatever you submit through the form. -Angela

As a mother of two dogs, whose mother was abandoned in the woods while pregnant with them, I feel your pain, and hurt with you. 16 1/2 beautiful years, that now seem like mere minutes. I confident that you'll find peace and comfort because you gave Shelby a wonderful life.

I only wish more humans could realize the special bond between a canine companion and their human master..... I dread the eventual day my canine and I part, but I try to realize the best of it each day.

Girlie, I am so sorry for your loss. She will always have a special place in your heart that can never be replaced. I had an irish setter who lived to swim. When she was 7, she was diagnosed with bone cancer. It quickly spread to her lungs & they gave her 2-3 months to live. She lived almost a year & had a good quality of life during that time. The tumor got so big that we had to have her put down. One of the hardest days of my life. Again, I'm sorry. Take care of yourself & know that you made a huge difference in her long life.

I can't help but cry a little, girlie. I know exactly how you feel. Blessings to you and your pup. She's free now.

I had to have one of my cats put to sleep last year 7/12/07 her name was Natasha, see my image gallery. She was 14 and was a sweet soul. I cried like a baby as the pet put her to sleep. My tears are mixed with the dirt over her grave. I'm sorry for you loss hun, and I do feel your pain. Love your pets, treat them like your children because they are!
