how are you saving money?

With the surge in fuel, food, and taxes, what have you been doing to save money? Over the past few months I have made these adjustments:

  • Cheaper home insurance - changed company, but kept same coverage.
  • Car insurance - raised my deductibles
  • Resetting my mortgage (cheaper interest rate)
  • Eliminated once a month eating out; only do birthdays and other special occasions.
  • Adjusted thermostat by 1 degree cooler in winter; 2 degress warmer in summer - not sure of savings cost rates have changed.
  • I only drive when absolutely necessary. Perhaps this saves me two tanks of gas over a year.
  • Use more coupons than I used to use.
  • Bring my lunch to work - using leftovers from dinner.
  • Reduced food costs eating more chicken (getting sick of chicken)

So what might be left.  At this point I can only eliminate things. I am considering getting rid of cablevision.  I do not have a cell phone, so I can't save in that area. Considering getting rid of the internet.

Where have you trimmed costs? Perhaps there are things I might have overlooked.

I am a volunteer at the Dorcas Shop in Cary. If I really need something, I can always find it there. People donate the most amazing things. And if I do make a purchase I regret, I just bring it back to be sold again. All the money raised at the Shop goes back into the community. Come see!

"Time Warner has a monopoly with a certain group of households (like me) who either can't receive a satellite signal, or can't put one up due to HOA's."

HOA's cannot prevent a satellite dish from being put in service:

http://www.fcc.gov/mb/facts/otard.html

"he rule (47 C.F.R. Section 1.4000) has been in effect since October 1996, and it prohibits restrictions that impair the installation, maintenance or use of antennas used to receive video programming. The rule applies to video antennas including direct-to-home satellite dishes that are less than one meter (39.37") in diameter (or of any size in Alaska), TV antennas, and wireless cable antennas. The rule prohibits most restrictions that: (1) unreasonably delay or prevent installation, maintenance or use; (2) unreasonably increase the cost of installation, maintenance or use; or (3) preclude reception of an acceptable quality signal."

Nothing.

I don't have much to cut back on. I have for a long time taken my lunch, I have a very economical car for trans and its 18 miles round trip. I have the home/auto insurance too and I save 20% right off the top. I don't have a balance on a credit card right now, just a truck payment on my second vehicle. I do have both landline and cell phones but I am keeping them, not cancelling cable/internet either, as long as I can afford them I will be happy to pay the bill. I don't eat out often and I use my "charcoal" grill as often as its not raining, food tastes better and it is healthier. Also if your like me and you eat healthy, it costs more so in some ways you can't save on food but you can in future health costs. If you smoke or drink, it could be a good time to consider quiting, I don't drink much but I quit smoking 11/06 and save more than $120 a month and both are more dangerous as you get older. I also had a new heat pump installed last year...saving a ton on my elec bill every month.

I got my cell phone years ago. And that's when I got rid of the landline phone bill. I just couldn't see paying for two phones when one would do.

Some people with cell phones have gotten rid of their land lines. That is one I'm considering.

Cablevision...That's such an over-priced luxury. Time Warner has a monopoly with a certain group of households (like me) who either can't receive a satellite signal, or can't put one up due to HOA's. I'm paying $108 for digital cable and Road Runner Lite. I am going to downgrade to standard and try to forget my TV "had" high defination. That should save me about $20/mo.

There will be no more splurging at the stores anymore. Running out of money is NOT something I want to experience. My job is in jeopardy because business is the worst it's ever been in the history of the company. I may be job-looking soon if they keep on pushing me towards the door as they have been lately....

smoke- LOL!!!!

Credit Cards: Yes this is a big one. I am down to one and should have it gone within the next 4 to 6 months. After that I only intend to use the one that gives me cash credits and I will pay off he balance each and every month if I do use it.

Metal Handles ??

Maybe that's whats been giving my daughter the hard time ??
