who has a side by side fridge?

For posterity,When I was a kid my father gave in to my mother for a side"B"side! In those days a fridge(as me and my brothers called it!)was expensive! We also had a chest freezer and Dad claimed the power bill was eating him alive!!!Soooo he gave in to Mom and bought this huge side by side so he could un-plug the freezer! (Now I'm going to tell you how old I'am!) In those days the Side by's still had two compressors!Soooo he still had two motors sucking juice! But my mother was really happy , she even got the color she wanted! YELLOW! yuck! I know not relevant but was funny to me! Note: why is it funny when your Dad screws up....until you get to be a Dad!

For reliability go for a GE/Hotpoint unit. Don't buy a Frigidaire or Amana. Do your homework. Read reviews on them. And when you do get one, put you some Vaseline on the door gaskets on the hinge side (of both doors), and come in about 1" towards the middle of the doors. That will prevent a twisted gasket down the road, especially if you do it once a year.

Side-by-sides are pointless, in my opinion. The Pizza Box Test: I test all my potential fridges by bringing a medium sized pizza box from my favorite pizza place into the fridge store. I know it seems country, but the appliance needs to fit my lifestyle, not the other way around. If that box won't fit, I don't buy that fridge. I have NEVER found a side-by-side that would hold that pizza box.

love mine. we got one of the new models with the freezer on the bottom and water/ice in the door. Freezer on the bottom definitely makes a difference. more space in both fridge and freezer than in my previous one. only problem is that since it is a new model we have had some troubles with it. they have already replaced our ice maker twice and motherboard once. but we haven't had any problems since the motherboard was replaced (knock on wood).

As long as you don't prepare large dishes or want a real freezer they are fine. I like the ones with the freezer on the bottom but the ice makers do not hold very much ice so my husband says no.

Wow! Lots of advice on this. My last one was a side by side and food got 'lost' at the bottom of the refrigerator. The refridge part also wouldn't hold a large platter (something to think about if you do any entertaining...Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.) Plus the freezer was too narrow. I now have one with the freezer on the bottom and I love it. There is a drawer that pulls out, a shelf and room in the door for storage. This makes much more sense than the freezer on the top...who thought of that! Plus, since everything in the fridge part is waist high or higher, food doesn't get lost as often. Good luck. You'll have to let us know what you pick.
