I don't know about you guys but more and more of my money is slipping through my hands faster and faster.George Washington, Abe Lincoln, Alexander Hamilton and his buddy Andrew Jackson don't associate with me as much as they used to.  They used to party in my wallet for a good long while before they were forced to bypass my place altogether and head over to the gas station.  (Grant and Franklin pretend like they don't know me anymore but I still love them just the same...tell them that when and if you see them around.)  If my parents were alive today they would be saddened by what their children are having to contend with. I remember when my mother would save every container she could get her hands on until they were falling out of the cupboards whenever we opened them to get things out.  Cool Whip was her favorite!  It irritated us to no end that she did that.

But one day it hit me as to why she did that.  She grew up during the depression and was in college at Atlanta during WWII.  (Both my parents were from that area.)  Mom was an only child and her parents were divorce, so she lived with her mom and her aunt in downtown ATL.  Their home was very nice but when times were hard they saved EVERYTHING which was practically all the time.  They even used evaporated milk on their cereal (warm) to save money on milk....NASTY!!!

*Do you have any idea what warm Pet Milk does to Kellogg’s cornflakes??!!  That's nightmare material right there, but I lived it when visiting Grandma and Auntie in Atlanta during the summer. That's how my mom grew up and with my father being a farm boy from outside the big city they both shared the same life stories and views.  There were 8 of us kids and my grandmother lived with us when we were growing up. We were the black "Waltons" of our neighborhood  on base  *minus grandpa and the lumber mill. The thing I remember most is that we ALWAYS grew some sort of vegetables. Not much mind you when we lived on base at Camp LeJeune because we didn't have much space to work with but we always had cucumbers, tomato, green beans, squash and hot peppers and bell peppers.  We never wanted for much even with a house that full with eleven mouths to feed.  When daddy retired from the Marines we bought about an acre of land outside of town and the gardening exploded.  There was so much food that we hardly had a place to sit down and do homework until mom canned the veggies and pickled the cucumbers that didn't got into salads.    I said all that only to say this.  The costs to ship these vegetable and fruits to our local stores from outside the farming area and the country for that matter is directly affecting our ability to feed ourselves.  It might be worth a shot to try this out.  Even a small garden would help your family or your neighbor's family out.  I had such great memories of seeing my dad and mom gardening every summer.  It was so rewarding for all of us and even the tiniest of kids can help out.  They can plant and tend to their own little plants and make a big ceremony out of being able to eat their very first vegetables that they grew themselves.   Fantastic memories for everyone all around.   The cost is do this is minimal, but the rewards are enormous!

This year I decided to plant watermelons and tomatoes and yellow peppers.I've also got my spices..Chives,Basil,thyme and rosemry. However till they start to produce I usually stop at the Veggie stand on US 1 going towards Youngsville. They're cheap and fresh!!

I have a garden every year...love it so much...very relaxing and rewarding. I also have a bunch of different fruits as well. Go check out my Image gallery from yesterday of some thing growing!!!

I'm doing my part! We planted 15 tomato plants, 9 pepper plants, a bunch of watermelon seeds and 1 cucumber plant. (This is my 3rd year of trying with cucumbers - apparently my thumb is black as regards to cukes). If we had more space (only a corner lot) I'd try for some serious veggies like potatoes, yams, broccoli, etc. My older sister is convinced that everyone planting a garden is the only way we will survive.

I'm growing tomatoes, spinach, raddishes, garlic, onions, basil, parsley, & rosemary... and I do save EVERY container that I can. I'm all about the recycling... ok. I'm cheap.

we're doing upside down tomatoes, and a few other things...

I have enough property for a nice sized garden but I absolutely dispise gardening. I guess if things got bad off enough I could do it. I've done it before.

Flowerpot garden- Herbs, Tomatoes and peppers.

Cucumbers are sensative. I would plant more than 1. If you touch the ends when they are wet they die.

I used to have a garden, but between the trees cutting off most of the sunlight and the deers stopping by for midnight snacks, I gave it up a couple of years ago.

We certainly need to do more of that type of thing. it is cheap in $ but expesive in time....
