please support the back home box foundation
Published May. 17, 2008Here's an organization that I can (and do) support, and I really encourage you good folks to do the same. It's run by an online friend of mine, and he's a really good guy and this is a real charity, and in fact has been at Carter-Finley Stadium at the spring football game accepting donations - in other words, it is not fly-by-night scam, it's the real thing:
From their web site:
The members of America's Armed Forces are our heroes. Our goal is to give as many of the brave people serving overseas as possible the simple pleasure of opening a big 'ol box of things they miss.
Each week we ship boxes of candy, cookies, peanuts, pretzels, salsa, pickles, Fiddle Faddle, Froot Loops, ramen noodles, toiletries, foot powder, Cheetos, trail mix, playing cards, board games, and the all-time favorite - cigars - to these brave men and women.
We are based in Raleigh, NC - we meet each Tuesday night to pack boxes and get them ready to mail. If you are in the Raleigh area, send us an e-mail and let us know if you can help with shopping, packing, or mailing (that's where we need help the most). If you are out of the area, we would love to have your financial support.
We are a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation - 100% of what you contribute goes into the boxes.
Think about it for a minute: if you want something so simple as a box of Fiddle-Faddle, you can drive yourself to the store and pick one up and go enjoy some caramel popcorn...and probably not even think twice about it. It's easy for most any of us to do. But what if you were halfway across the world -- and in a place that doesn't have such things? And even if they did have it, you might be kidnapped or worse, killed on the way?
That's the reality of the situation in Iraq. No matter how you feel about this war, whether it is right, wrong or whether we stay the course or should pack our troops up and bring them home, they still deserve our thanks and support. Our soldiers are our countrymen, our friends, our neighbors, our co-workers or our brothers, sisters, sons or daughters.
Donating even just a few dollars, or a few hours of your time can make a real difference to someone. Please take the time to consider making a small donation.
They post e-mails received back from the soldiers that receive their packages and this is what one of them had to say (visit their site to see more, the letters are great to read, and there are photos, etc.):
My name is Leland Robinson and I am with the 1123rd TC here in Taji, Iraq and I would just like to Thank You for all the many things you guys are doing for us, and most of all the moral of each and every solder that gets something out of the packages you send. They mean alot to us, just knowing that someone out there that we have never met, or even seen cares enough to send some love and support in a box. Our families thank you and we do appreciate your time, I know there is alot of time that goes into what you guys do, and I would like to tell you that it is well worth every min and sec that we open them boxes. We feel like it is Christmas all over again every day, and it is always some new. Once again Thank You and God Bless what you guys are doing for us. Sgt Robinson, Leland 1123rd TCThat's thanks enough for me.
And thanks for reading this, and I hope you consider supporting these good folks.

Jackadoo, me too. It makes their day to hear positive words for their efforts. My son called me in tears because he has been out to dinner and citizens have offered to pay for his dinner one evening. It meant everything in the world to him. He loves his country!
