is this the correct dui punishment?
Published May. 16, 2008"Emily Elizabeth May of Raleigh died a year ago in crash in Fayetteville. She was the passenger in a car driven by a drunken friend.[Polumbo]
Polumbo pleaded guilty in January to felony death by vehicle, reckless driving, driving while impaired and driving after consuming alcohol while under the age of 21. Judge E. Lynn Johnson sentenced her to 30 days in jail plus three years of probation. If Polumbo violates her probation, she could go to prison for 20 months."
The above paragraphs are from the Fayetteville Observer May 16,2008 http://www.fayobserver.com/article?id=294123
I hate for a 20 year old to spend her life in jail for killing a friend, she must be punishing herself something awful. BUT...it the punishment enough?
The article in its entirety explains how Mays family is suing all the people who served Polumbo alcohol and also Fayetteville and the camera company for mounting a 300 pound camera on a break away pole.

At a bare minimum adjustment to the sentence Polumbo should spend the rest of her life on probation. Terms: any alcohol related conviction and she serves 20 years w/o parole.
Additionally, there should be a significant term (~10-20hrs per month for 20 years) of community service serving families who have been victimized by DUI, serving in rehabs for innocent victims struck by DUI drivers, etc.
This kind of sentencing would not only keep in the forefront of her mind the impact of one foolish decision but also give her an opportunity to give back to the "community" of victims she hurt. THAT would give her the opportunity to truly repent and to deal with her guilt by giving something back.
What do ya'll think this fine morning in GoLo court?
