the funk brothers

Published May. 15, 2008

I caught this movie the other night for the first time.

Truly amazing story about this group of muscians.

Together, the Funk Brothers were on more #1 hits than the Beatles, Elvis and the Beach Boys COMBINED!

I would highly recommend this to any serious music fans out there.

Has anyone else seen this movie and just thought....WOW!

I vaguely remember a friend of mine saying he was going to see them in Raleigh. I should have been all over that. Probably will not get another chance.

charles, great call on Buena Vista. I caught that one in the last year or so and I was also blown away at the talent shown there.

Music movies are always at the top of favorites list. So many great one's out there, but this one really blew my mind and seemed worthy of the 1st blog.

I have been to the Motown studio. It is much more cramped than you would think. As a former professional musician, I can't see how they produced this much sound from that little place. I also saw the video. Joan Osborne put on one of the best performances I have ever seen, and I have seen thousands! WOW! Yes, the Funk Brothers were probably the best studio band ever, and Barry Gordy didn't even invite them to the 25th reunion. Let's not forget the brilliant arranger, Harvey Fuqua. Listen to David Ruffin's last hit "My Whole World Ended The Moment You Left Me" and you will see his skills. I could listen to Joan sing this song 20 times in a row! What a fantastic performance from her and the Funks!

I first saw "standing in the shadows" two or three years ago and now everytime I see that it is on I watch again.

It's the soul within the soul. These guys loved what they did and had a great time doing it.

In the documentary they never really complain about what they were paid but whatever it was could not have been enough.

Truly a great story - Thanks for blogging about it.

JOO

'Ball of Confusion' is a true today as it was the day it was written.

Eddie: People moving out, people moving in. Why, because of the color of their skin. Run, run, run but you sure can't hide. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Vote for me and I'll set you free. Rap on, brother, rap on. Dennis: Well, the only person talking about love thy brother is the...(preacher.) And it seems nobody's interested in learning but the...(teacher.) Segregation, determination, demonstration, integration, Aggravation, humiliation, obligation to our nation. Ball of confusion. Oh yeah, that's what the world is today. Woo, hey, hey.

Paul: The sale of pills are at an all time high. Young folks walking round with their heads in the sky. The cities ablaze in the summer time. And oh, the beat goes on.

they are GREAT!!! I just watched a DVD about the temptations and they were on there. True musicians in every sense.

They appeared at NCSU several years back and it was the most amazing concert I have ever seen. And I've seen alot of concerts. Got to meet them afterwards and discuss some of their music and history. I actually met the bass player who thumped the intro to Ball of Confusion. I was in awe.

Doc, I saw that film a couple of years ago on HDNet by chance. I was supposed to go meet some friends and ended up watching the whole thing.

Those dudes could play! I would have given anything to be up on that stage with them at the concert at the end of the movie, and I actually recorded the songs off of it onto my IPOD so we could listen to them going down the road.

You're right -- it was a WOW movie.

Another one that's really great if you haven't seen it is 'Buena Vista Social Club.' It's the story of the old Cuban musicians that Ry Cooder got back together and recorded and album with and then toured with. There's a scene where two awesome musicians, both in their 80's are walking down a street near Times Square. One of them says to the other, "I always dreamed of this place. I never thought I would see it" and the other guy says something like "Me either." Powerful, powerful stuff.

These guys are GREAT!

Ha, great minds think alike...I posted this same blog several weeks ago,

Thanks for sharing.
