i love the dentist!

I just wish that I could afford to go!! Does anyone know wht going to the dentist cost more than the doctor?

If your self-employed you can't get DH for you and your family,just put braces on our daughter ($5800) and they wanted 20% up front. A visit to the dentist for a cleaning $120 for our son, forget about my wife and I. We tried to get into the clinic at the dental school at UNC but they only take unusual orthadontal cases and for preventive care you can come sit and they may get to you and they might not.

I've always found it interesting that, for instance, I have to pay $150 for a procedure. (I choose to have no dental insurance.)

However, IF I had insurance, the dentist would be quite happy to receive the contracted amount of, let's say $90, from the insurance company for the same procedure.

Assuming I pay before I walk out the door (no billing charges incurred) it at least seems to me I should ALSO be able to pay the $90 instead of the higher $150.

What am I missing here???

...it's the insurance industry folks... They make more than the doctors. The lobbyists have influenced the government to the point that they have created a win-win equation. They are the #2 investment to make behind oil. Utilities are # 3 with a 10% increase every year.

the advent of aids has caused a lot of prices to go up in the medical field. dentist most likely has more blood issues than most doctors.

You paying the dentist for what he paid to have all the women on his staff breast enlargements... I try to visit the dentist once a week since this has taken place.

From my experience, they know you are desperate if you are calling with a toothache, and will pay just about anything to get the toothache to stop!

I think dental is more expensive because it's more invasive than other check-ups. Dentist work in a very small and sensitive area, and it takes a lot of skill. Not saying that the reg. DR isn't skilled... but they basically look at physical symptoms and use thier knowledge for a diagnosis. Dentist are essentially doing surgery when they repair a tooth and what not. Also the same with Gyn's.

Tap - our dental stinks big time... Our health insurance too. It's free for me but to include my DH and daughter it would be $500 a month! We insure them with an indivdual policy (thankfully they are healthy) so it costs about $250 a month... Any way you go about though it is awfully expesive... Universal healthcare isn't the answer, but I would like to see some way for consumers to buy into group coverage to help keep the costs lower...

Prolly cause many a mouth are the nastiest, germiest, stinkiest place on your body. I can't imagine doing that for a living.

that ranks up there with cleaning out septic tanks...

I had to use a PPO over a DMO. The DMO was a better option but not available in my area (my company went by zip code to determine this which was so unfair since there isn't much in my zip anyway, and I don't mind traveling for services). Anyway, I end up having to pay $4 a visit that the insurance won't cover, and they are paying $1000 towards my son's braces, so it has been worth it so far. I just can't afford medical insurance from my company, like over $500 dollars a month for the whole family.
