luther the rooster, r.i.p.
Published May. 15, 2008Well, it's my sad duty to report that poor ol' Luther is dead. Searchers found the body Wednesday just outside the neighborhood. It appears a car hit him in the past day or two. [Insert chicken-crossing-the-road joke here. Come on, I know you were thinking about it, too.]
As I reported in my earlier blog about Luther, he was a pet only in the loosest sense. He wandered into the subdivision a few months ago. I fed him. He came back and stayed most days in the backyard.
He lived there, but Luther never was completely comfortable with his new home. Whenever anyone stepped onto the patio, he would dart crazily into the woods. I guess his days consisted mostly of long hours at my chicken-scratch buffet, punctuated by moments of blinding terror as almost-6-foot-tall humans pounded around on the porch.
Luther's final months were comfortable, but probably bewildering to him. For my part, it was a fun, weird few months, and I'm grateful for the experience.

tmedlin and squirrelingdervish: I thought about having a pan of roasted Luther -- but now, I really couldn't do that, could I? I wouldn't even know how to get the feathers off.
Wonder Bubbles: My wonderful brother, who is a veterinary assistant, picked up Luther's body and buried down on my family's land near Kipling. Bless him. He does all of the sad work.
