the unexpected package from ups
Published May. 14, 2008Last week a medium sized package arrived at my home. It had my address on the shipping label but the recipient was a name I was unfamiliar with. We have quite a few new neighbors around, in fact one right next door, so I told one of them out in the driveway that I had a package that might possibly be theirs. This individual couldn't speak english very well, but I got the idea across, I think, and they led me to believe they'd check on it later. I left the package on the deck where they could access it, and then I drove off on scheduled errands.
I came back later in the evening and the package was gone. Once inside I asked my son if the neighbors had finally come over and picked up the package and he wasn't even aware anyone had stopped by so I figured all was well and piegonholed the incident.
Fast forward to yesterday. A series of rapid knocks brought me to my front door where I stepped out on the deck and one of two men in non-descript clothing asked me if I'd received any kinds of packages lately. I told them about the one last week and I figured the neighbors had got it since it was not mine or my son's. They became very inquisitive about the fact , did I actually see the neighbors come over and look at the package. No, I told them, I'd simply told the neighbors of the package and then I drove off figuring they'd get it when they had time. That's why I'd left it out on the deck where they could pick it up easier. By now I was a little apprehensive that maybe I'd given a package meant for one of these two men, to the wrong people. This was when they finally identified themselves as undercover drug agents for two local agencies. This is when I finally saw the belt badges and pistols. I am soooo unobservant. LOL
The package was full of drugs and had been under surveillance the entire time it sat on my deck, which turned out to be hours. They had thought it was meant for us I suppose, and when we just left it out there on the deck, they had to sit on stakeout and watch and wait to see what would happen.
I told them the package was gone when I had came home that night, and they let me know they'd eventually came and retrieved it. Whew. I was freaking out a little by now. But I think they sensed my sincerity plus I'm sure I'd been followed by another unit unawares that afternoon to see if I was making "contacts" or something. LOL. I now wonder how long they sat outside the Dairy Bar while I polished off yet another bannana split? :)
The whole thing could have been avoided if the delivery person had made me sign for the package because then I'd seen the wrong name on the label. But she'd just sat it on the deck and drove off. Kinda different from normal procedures that I'm used to , but I guess it was part of the leo plan to get the drugs to the recipient. Whew.
Now I am wondering, while the Law was watching me and my home to see what happened to the package of illegal drugs, it weighed about 8 to 10 pounds I'd guess and due to it's size I'm betting it was cocaine but who knows, now I wonder who else was out there watching me and watching them as well? Kind of scary when you think about it in that light.
The agents told me this kind of thing has been happening more and more often in the area. I believe they said I was the third in our neighborhood in the recent weeks. That's really scary. What if I'd been less honest and taken the package inside and opened it? Would I now be a feature on Court TV or America's Most Wanted? Or what if I'd toted my pistol to the door because two strange good sized men were outside knocking on my door and these days you never know who is actually out there? The whole episode is spooky. Just thought I'd share.
And if that delivery person is out there reading this, please for my sake and others who are not involved in this kind of mess, have someone sign for that package so it could be shown then and there if the right person is receiving it. My whole life could have been turned upside down in moments and all could have been avoided by asking me to sign on the dotted line.

When one ships via UPS, Fedex or DHL, there is a block that says recipient must sign for package. If that block isn't checked and if the package ISN'T insured, they can just leave it at the address. Scary indeed, isn't it! Could've been a bomb.
God bless.
