let's have lunch with donald rumsfeld

Published May. 14, 2008

The Pentagon recently (after being forced) released an audio recording of a lunch Donald Rumsfeld attended with retired military analysts (you know, the army of talking heads that seem to be kept perpetually just offstage, ready to opine Bush admin talking points on a moment's notice, day or night ...)

I'd comment on what he had to say, but it really speaks for itself. It's amazing what they'll say when they think nobody else is going to hear it ...

You can hear individual clips taken from the much larger recording HERE

Or you can just listen to the entire thing HERE

Rumsfeld had the rare opportunity to play chess in the middle east region under multiple presidents...I'm sure he'd like to bury the footage of warm handshakes with Saddam back in '83 when he was special envoy for the Reagan adminstration to move the chess pieces again and support Iraq against Iran. In '88 he was trumpeting his success at normalizing relations with Iraq during a brief run for the GOP nomination. (we are so lucky *that* never went anywhere) we were satisfied then with Iraq as a totalitarian state because, hey, at least they were secular and would help keep the budding Islamic republic of Iran at bay! Years of real-time global gameplay have made him cynical and condescending. I'm sure when 'W' took office, H.W. said, "Rummy's good, why don't you stick with him?" Come to think of it, picking most of dad's old cabinet and a few oil company executives probably took all of 15 minutes. Well, long enough for them to scrub the name 'Condoleezza' off that oil tanker anyway.

"I read the "analysis" and that left wing tripe couldn't make it sound all that terrible, so I didn't bother to listen."

Agreed, the analysis was a bit much, but it was the only source for the clips I could find, and they're Flash, so I couldn't link directly to them.

The second link is direct from the DOD's servers.

I read the "analysis" and that left wing tripe couldn't make it sound all that terrible, so I didn't bother to listen.

Not a big Rummy fan, and if Bush hand't been so pig-headed and had fired him 2 months earlier, the Republicans would have held the Congress. That makes me like him even less.

I listened to the short clips. Nothing in there surprises me. As to the comment about Americans, I would say for a good part of the population these days he is correct in the statement. Some of the folks in this country seems to suffer from daily doses of amnesia. I wish the gentleman that wrote his analysis of the clips were a bit less biased. He needs to understand that he is also suffering from a bit of that amnesia. The final part about another 9/11 - that would not shock me. I would lay most of the blame for that at the feet of this President, the previous congress, and this congress. They have drug their feet in doing what needs to be done to secure the borders. We do not have borders we have sieves.

I dont like him either...I will let you have my share.

You really should give it a listen. What he has to say about American citizens, in particular, is illuminating.

Elcid I'll bypass listening to his voice. Ireally never cared for this person in charge of our military and I think the wrong choices had something to do with him in the beginning of this war. IMO, One of the worst mistakes Bush did was listen to his quidance in the war for so long.
