getting in shape?

Published May. 14, 2008

OK goloers!  I have a serious question for you all.

My dr says I need to be doing weight bearing exercise.  Osteoporosis runs in my family and I want to do whatever I can to make sure my bone density remains healthy.  I try to get plenty of calcium, but my dr said weight bearing exercise.  She specifically said that walking is good, but I need something that is actually moderately jarring, like jogging.

I have begun walking 3/4 mile and I'll be trying to do this every day.  But I have to be honest, it's not easy for me.  My wreck left me with very bad ankles on both sides.  I wear a brace on the left and have good/bad days with both.  Walking for me is like walking in ski boots (no flexability whatsoever).  Occassionally, my ankles will slip out of socket and some days they simply hurt too bad to be up much.  I often keep crutches near at hand.

Now, with that history, what exercises can a 'handicapped' person do that will still give the weigh-bearing benefits, but not put me in the wheelchair by the end of the day?  I intend to get back into intensive riding when we move.  This is great cardio, but not very weight-bearing.  As I said, I've begun walking, but I don't know how long that will last with my history.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be very welcome!

EDIT: That's a photo of me.  You can see the brace I wear.  It prohibits any range of motion in that ankle.  I only have about 5% range in my right, 0% in the left.  Makes things like elipticles difficult.

To me it sounds like walking is already pushing the envelope for you. It IS weight bearing exercise. It doesn't have to be jarring, high impact. That's obviously bad for your case. I would stick with the walking if you can. Your ankles DON'T need more impact than they are getting. If you need more cardio, then swimming or biking might be good. Don't take your doc's word as gospel. You know your body best.

Also, if you aren't in some kind of physical therapy for your ankles, you might consider that. I don't know your situation, but you should be able to improve your range of motion over time.

You can try Tai Chi or step aerobics. Wall squats, push ups are good (wall push ups work if you can't do military). Put on the music and dance around your house for 10 minutes at the time. Walking lunges are good. Some yoga moves are good. And of course lifting weights. A stationary bike can be used of you up the resistance.

Horseback riding is excellent cardio and good for muscle strength, especially legs and core muscles (good posture is a must). But it doesn't offer impact for bone density.

I've begun walking, which will hopefully help. I figure it can't hurt. But doc says I need impact/wgt bearing, which leaves me lost for ideas.

horseback riding???

Have you tried riding English a little? That's great weight-bearing exercise for the legs, but not overly jarring.

Swimming is a great cardio exercise which also puts pressure on your muscles and bones. Also, you could try walking on a treadmill as there is less jarring to the body than walking/running outside, especially if you have the right kind of shoes. There is all kind of weight bearing equipment in a health club which will put pressure on the bones without placing extra stress on your feet. Most of them will allow you a free trial workout and should have certified trainers to help you learn what exercises to do. If you are a beginner, the key is not to overdo it initially as your body needs to become adjusted to the change. Start out with light weights and progress upward as you become accustomed to the routine. Wearing a brace on your ankles when exercising might also help you. Once you get into this, you will be hooked. You can also talk calcium supplements as I am sure your Doc told you. The bone structure regenerates every 3 months. Best to you.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I'll check into water fitness. I have tried to do an eliptical, but again, with zero % range of motion in ankles, it's nearly impossible. I have an exercise bike, but the dr said 'impact' is key to help build bone mass. And impact is what I can't do.

Hist, maybe that's why I'm out of shape, I try to avoid the jumping, flying, running, stabbing and dodging that you mention.

Steve, I LIKE your way of thinking about exercise, but again, I don't see how that will help maintain bone density. Though I'll take it under advisement and see. Perhaps if I increase my weight, then even the simple act of walking will be more weight-bearing and presto, better bone health?

Seriously though, thanks for the ideas.

LOL

Historians got something there....

so true historian....so true

Here at Golo, everyone gets enough excercise jumping to conclusions, flying off the handle, running down other members, stabbing friends in the back, dodging responsibility, and pushing their luck{;o)

You might try joining a gym. If it prescribed by your doctor then your health insurance may even pay for part of it.
