to the wire
Published May. 14, 2008Make or break week for three people. Who will survive and who will not.
Little David:
- And So It Goes - Billy Joel. Excellent choice. Monsterous performance. Perfect vocal control. Finally showed some power in his pipes instead of wimp-central.
- With You - Chris Brown. You've got to be kidding me? There's something about the whitest teen in America singing that song that just didn't cut it at all. Boo? Ha!
- Longer - Dan Fogelburg. Junked it up with completely unnecessary runs. Missed the key change. Timing was off. He holds notes too long many times. Beyond that, it was sappy coming out of a teenager. It's an older song for older emotions.
Syesha:
- If I Ain't Got You - Alecia Keyes. Strange vocal timing, but hit it with perfect pitch. Very hard song to sing and she pulled it off. Not stunningly, but good enough.
- Fever - Peggy Lee. If that song is sung properly, every guy listening to it should be in heat. I was in the mood to dig out a hangnail or floss my teeth after hearing her version. Technically good vocals, but just didn't hit the sexy needed for that song to be memorable.
- Hit Me Up - Rianna. Different song. Same deal. She just doesn't come off as a party girl and after than I really had no desire to hang out with her on Key Biscayne all night long. Boring.
David Cook:
- First Time I Ever Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack. So I'm thinking, this is really gonna be a joke. But then he opened his mouth. WOW! Fantastic arrangement. Stunning power vocals. He felt the song.
- Dare You To Move - Switchfoot. Crap, Typical teenage schlock that would be performed by a five piece group with an untalented front man at a local Battle of the Bands.
- I Don't Want To Miss A Thing - Arrowsmith. I will always connect that song to the signature scene in Armaggedon. And I will always compare any version to Steven Tyler. David Cook is no Steven Tyler. Not even close. No. No. No. Missed it big time.
So who goes? Or rather, who stays?
On pure vocal potential - Syesha. On commercial appeal - David Cook. On flash-in-the-pan, let's make some quick money - Little David.
I would toss Little David and have a head-to-head between Syesha and David Cook for the finals. But that's not gonna happen. Syesha goes. Unfortunately.
