On our website, there is a poll being taken up about what would motivate you the most about climbing Everest. The view, spiritual reasons, being able to say you did it, or just the experience. I would pick bragging rights because it's not too many times that you meet someone that has climbed the tallest mountain in the world. The experience is great, but telling people you did it is more important. Tell me what you think?-Patrick

I'd do it just to do it. Fun story to tell the grand kids!

i just finished watching "storm on everest" about the failed 96 season where rob hall and scott fisher....(guides) die. You couldnt make me go. I am sorry but that is cold. I am amazed that anyone with the price of the climb can book on a tour. I mean look at the numbers...how many people are on everest at any given time..then look at the trash ...tons of it. so you got bitter weather....trashy surroundings...coupled with dead bodies...i will pass..on this..thank you

Why would I want to brag about myself ? Why would I want to contribute to the tons of trash at Everest ? Why would I want to risk my life for such a selfish reason ? Why would I want to spend enough money to make the climb as to pay for something more permanent or beneficial ? What reason since Sir Edmund Hillary is there to climb that mountain ? There can only be one reason. The inflation of my ego to be among an elite small group of humans who need to be viewed as superficially superior.

Seriously, those are the best reasons? Spiritual- NO. I shouldn't have to risk my life climbing to the top of the world to experience God. If I am doing things right, I'd recognize him right beside me in the lowlands or anywhere else I go. The view? No. I am perfectly satisfied with other mountain views, and appreciate the pictures others take so everyone doesn't have to climb to see the view. Being able to say I did it? No. I've done a lot of things, experienced a lot of things no one else has experienced, don't need that one. The experience? No. See above. Plus I would feel like a selfish tool if I died up there leaving my kids to fend for themselves without a father. Of course we do a lot of things in life that could lead to this like simply getting on the highway, but they don't involve knowingly and deliberately walking past frozen dead bodies along the way. The only ones the world will remember are Hillary and Norgay.

Big Insanity and blackdog, something about this story intriques both of you. The fact that you are reading it and also responding. I am not sure if it is jealousy or what?
