texas polygamists nightmare

Published May. 13, 2008

You can say what you want about the legitimacy of polygamy. You can have your own views regarding the age of majority when it comes to marriage or engaging in sexual relationships. But you can not deny that the state of Texas has grossly overstepped their bounds.

AP news is reporting that the woman who gave birth to a baby on 29 April is not a minor as the state of Texas welfare officials have asserted. She is over 18. And the woman who gave birth to a baby on Monday is also an adult, in complete contridiction to what officials are stating. And in complete contridiction to the reason why those 400-plus kids were ripped away from their families in the first place.

This smacks of another Ruby Ridge or Waco -- government officials given the power to exercise complete control over people's private lives, tearing people's lives apart in the process. And it's gotten to the point where agencies like this all over the country need to be stopped either through rational persuasion, the force of law, or raw force.

They can take their choice.

I agree that the State has WAY overstepped when they have taken away these children from their mothers at birth. They certainly haven't come through my town scooping up the newborns of underage mothers. One thing I don't get though----why have I heard NOTHING about the ACLU jumping in to protect the rights of these AMERICAN citizens, ie: both the mothers AND the babies? If these were ILLEGAL aliens (I refuse to bow down to the supposedly politically correct term of illegal "immigrant") then I am confident that the ACLU would have been all over this like stink on you-know-what from the start!

Steve, I usually agree with you, but your scenario is truly far fetched. For it to be a valid comparison, you would need to state that ALL the people in the cul-de-sac knew what was going on in that one house and they agreed with it, or at least knew and didn't report it.

Try not to stretch so much next time.

The two ladies who were wrongly separated from their babies are going to sue the state of Texas and I hope they do and hope they win, and win big.

I will say that more harm has been done to the children by the State of Texas than by the two mothers.

How is it that the State still doesn't have some of the 'ENSLAVED' girls turning over their captors? Surely they could have used enough duress after all this time in custody by holding promise of reuniting with their children?

This is government acting on false tips and total contempt to deny citizens their rights in a most serious manner.

The media is ready to make the exaggerate the news to sensationalize a story about SEX, RAPE, BABIES, AND RELIGION.

I had expressed an opinion last week some time that I thought the state over-stepped. Man, I think some people wanted to tear my head off. Now I do not agree with the type of life-style, I think one spouse at a time is more than enough, still I trust Government very little. We have seen too many abuses happen over and over. If in fact crimes were committed, then I hope they uncover what and who, and bring that person to justice. But I do still think the State of Texas did not act correctly in what they have done so far.

I will say this one more time. When the government want to round up all the 13-17 year old in America who are pregnant and got babies and remove everyone from the home then this should have been hahdled a little different so all those 462 children would not have been ripped from both parents without understanding any language but their own. We round up animals better than they did. They could have done more investigating and less grabbing. I don't think any child should be abused but I think these people have also had a loss of their civil liberties in this case. I'll hold off all judment making until I get all the results thaey are looking for. I a gree steve about what your post is saying.

yeah I think its NOT okay to rescue children from being sexually abused and raped

Steve using your scenerio - the exact same thing with a cul-de-sac, where all of the men were sharing a multitude of wives - all of which are under 18 or 17 and having sexual relations and you can't tell which ones are and which ones aren't - what would you do?

By the same accord Steve, if you have 200 girls under the age of 17 and out of the 200, 75 have been shown to have been pregnant already. Who is to say that the other 125 haven't already been forced into sexual situations and just not gotten pregnant yet.

I think no matter how you look at this situation, it was bad. While I hate to think of a bunch of children taken from their parents, honestly, in this situation, I don't know what the right answer would be except to remove all the under age children to prevent any futher/ future abuse. How do you just pick and choose who goes.

Based on all the accounts I have read, most of the "infants" were not seperated from their mothers because their mothers were the young girls removed from the compound as well. Very few of the "infants" removed were from older women.

But again, that's just second hand media informaion. SO I'm trying to see Steve's point while look at the childrens welfare as well.

You live in a cul-de-sac with ten other houses. One of them is dealing drugs. So the police come in and seize everyone's property, bank accounts, and split up families. Not just the drug dealers, but everyone.

For the next two years, you are at the mercy of a handful of social services cretins who are convinced that because one of the ten homes was dealing drugs, that all the homeowners on the street must be involved.

I don't think that would fly with many people. But what is the difference? If a crime was committed, then the state has an obigation to present probably cause, arrest the criminals, and put them on trial in a speedy manner. If not, the state needs to get out of the way.

Or are you one of those who really believes that if someone in a given neighborhood is, say, raped that the state has the right to force everyone on that street to submit to DNA testing?

As a new mom myself, my heart breaks for this woman who's child was taken from her at birth. There are so many kids that need to be taken away, I don't think this infant was in any danger. There is a huge problem here, with all these teens being forced to marry and have children, but taking this moms infant isn't going to fix the problem. I agree I think the state has crossed way over the line in this case.
