Published May. 13, 20084th-Grader Threatens Students With Knife On School BusBy Elizabeth ScarboroughPOSTED: 8:10 am CDT May 13, 2008UPDATED: 9:07 am CDT May 13, 2008
SPRING, Texas -- A 9-year-old on a Spring Independent School District bus held up a small kitchen knife to his throat, cut into the back of a seat and held the knife up to another child's throat, according to a video KPRC Local 2 obtained Monday.
The video also showed the 9-year-old grabbing the other student's neck.
KPRC Local 2 spoke with a woman who works for the district. She did not want her identity revealed because it could mean losing her job, but she said she wants people to know what happened while students were on their way home from Burchett Elementary on May 6.
"I was very disturbed by it, very frightened," she said. "There were a lot of kids on the bus that day that were scared, and you could tell by their body language."
The video showed that student also pointed the knife at three girls sitting behind him.
"It was very scary to think what if there would have been a bump on the bus and he would have slipped," the woman said. "Just a slip could have cost another child's life."
She said the district did not handle the incident well. She said parents still had not been notified as of Monday, and staff had to find out for themselves.
"I have not heard anything from administrators about this situation period," she said.
According to the school district, there were two students involved. Officials said both students were suspended from school for an unspecified number of days and will not be in class with the general population for the rest of the school year. They have also been removed from the bus.
"He's still on campus. How's that doing enough?" asked the Spring ISD employee. "I don't think it's fair that students go to school scared. You should be able to come to school and feel safe."
Administrators said the only stricter punishment would have been expulsion, but that was "not an option for their age group". They could not press criminal charges because both students were under the age of 10, and the small kitchen knife is not considered a prohibited weapon.
The district would not say why a second student was disciplined, or if that child received the same punishment as the one in the video.
Talk about birth control? Where are the parents of this kid? Why didn't his lil' thug behind get thrown out of the school completely and put in juvinile some where. He needs his romp tore up!!! Parents pay more attention to your children. If you spare the rod, you'll spoil the child. Do your darn job in raising your kids or don't have them!

Because of incidents like this & schools NOT doing something to protect the other kids (like expulsion, permanently for these lil sickos), it's no wonder NO ONE wants to ride school buses any more. This just contributes to more cars on the road & more gas consumption. I pity school bus drivers, school teachers these days.

Very good point. In 1999 I remember a case where two young boys - both pre-teens right here in Raleigh shot and killed their father, tried to kill the mother but wounded her, and shot their sister who was a volley ball champion - who I believe was paralized or the mother was (memory fuzzy). The boys claimed they were sexually abused by the father - via back end. Every test given had shown that there had been no tearing or scarring. Then they finally admitted it was all because they were told NO when they wanted to go out

You are incorrect! I have spanked my child in front of the principal at their former school. I have spanked them in public if/when they needed it. Parents are allowed to discipline their kids. They are NOT allowed to brutalize them. There is a difference. I have had people stop and threaten to report me and I've handed them my phone to make the call. I have also had my child tell me that school told them if I spank them (bottom spank, no marks) that's abuse and they were advised to call the police. I told them to call and when they learn that as their parent, I'm in the right to discipline them, they'll get double. Funny, they never wanted to make that call, nor did they threaten me again.

You are right. I know what you are talking about. My parents just adopted 3 small kids (yes and I'm a grown woman with a hubby...LOL) and they had to use timeout this and timeout that. My father was livid at one point during the kids being in their foster card, but they made it work. Now that they have their last name, timeout is only an option for something small. Other than that, they get their lil' hind parts tore up! But yet they love mommy and daddy to life!! LOL.
