breathe no more

Published May. 12, 2008

So, now in early hours of the night, things are slowing down. Time for reflections and looking into those passages of the mind and the heart we seldom have time to search out during the light of day. Somehow, when the sun has fled and sleep has yet to arrive , our mind is free to examine itself. Our heart is more open.

What is your "saddest movie" memory. It can be a  parting scene, it can be a bedside death scene, there so many of both...whatever it is, share what moves you in a motion picture. And why does it do that to you. Is it something that reminds you of your own moment or is it just so well crafted that it never fails to move your heart.

"I’ve been looking in the mirror for so long,
That I’ve come to believe my souls on the other side.
All the little pieces falling shattered.
Shards of me too sharp to put back together.
Too small to matter,
But big enough to cut me in to so many little pieces if I try to touch her.

And I bleed. I bleed.
And I breathe. I breathe, no more

I take a breath and I try draw from my spirit's well.
Yet again you refuse to drink like a stubborn child.
Lie to me convince me that I’ve been sick forever.
And all of this will make sense when I get better.
But I know the difference between myself and my reflection.
I just can’t help but to wonder which of us do you love.

So I bleed. I bleed.
And I breathe.
I breathe no,
Bleed. I bleed.
And I breathe. I breathe. I breathe. I breathe, no more."

Near the end of "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" when Etta tells them she'll do anything for them, but "I won't watch you die" and she leaves. And then the final hail of bullets when you know they are horribly outnumbered and that they will not survive. Just gets to me.

City of Angels..Meg dies...

How about when Jack slips under water at the end of Titanic. If you use the remote just right you can make him rise back to the surface and die all over again. Great fun, psssed the wife off however.

The saddest movie I ever saw, and probably the best as well, is the Italian film, "The Bicycle Thief" ("Ladri di Biciclette"). It's about a man, in post WW-II Italy, who has his bicycle stolen, which he depend on for his job in order to support his wife and son. His desperation that is depicted throughout the film is incredibly moving.

Pay it Forward- the hospital scene when Helen Hunt is "told" about her son's death and then all the cars lined up outside their home... Forrest Gump - his narrative about when Jenny died... City of Angels - when Meg Ryan's character dies... Of course the other standard tear jerkers - Terms of Endearment, Beaches, and Steel Magnolias.

Mine aren't death scenes -- My surprise tears welled in "Lord of the Rings," after Frodo is stabbed by the Nazgul King, and Arwen takes him on her horse - the chase. God, I read the book a million times, I know how it went, but the intensity of the escape, her horrible pursuers, her whispering to her horse, speeding - flying - to rescue this foolish litte hobbit, rescue The Ring, rescue the world. All depending on the stamina of a horse, the courage of a woman and the bank of a sacred river.

*Edward Sissorhands = where the Winona character ask Edward (Johnny Depp) to hug her, and he whispers he can't. Always cry on that..

Scarlett O'Hara's "I'll never be hungry again" speech; M'Lynne's Graveyard Scene "Why? I want to know why? I could run all the way to Texas and back, but my daughter can't. She never could!" (Steel Magnolias); Old Yeller getting shot; several scenes from the Ya-Ya sisterhood, especially when Vivian loses it; Terms of Endearment ("It is time for her shot. My daughter is in pain." and also when the boys see Emma for the last time) When Dr. Greene died on ER (TV, I know but I actually cried - I so loved that character); My Girl - When Thomas J. dies from the bee stings and Vada finally shows up at the funeral; The Horse Whisperer - The accident scene as well as the end; Prince of Tides - various scenes; Of course Zeffirelli's Romeo & Juliet; the scene in Titanic when the older couple realize the dire situation and they dress up in their finery but go to their cabin and lay down together on their bed and the waters rise around them; any scene where a parent has to part from a child.

AI never fails to get to me. When the aliens try to bring what comfort they can to the robotic little boy with a clone of his "mother" from the dim past. That humanless, distant submerged future Earth always captivates me to watch, but at the same time I dread the inevitable depressing end.

Pay It Forward was truly a sad and moving movie...it motivates me to try to be a kinder person. I did not cry...I bawled! Sobbed even! Sooooooo Sad!!!
