north carolina mountains

One of my favorite places in the world ... the North Carolina Mountains! The boys and I are heading up the first week in June.  Any suggestions of things to do or see in and around Boone, Blowing Rock??

All these suggestions sound great. I would just re-emphasize Mount Mitchell, though I think they are still in the process of rebuilding the observation tower. There is also an awesome trail just below the summit that goes down the mountain about a mile. It is very scenic. I agree with StrollingBones about Grandfather Mt. It is very commercialized now. But if the $14 doesn't bother you it's a pretty neat place. On a clear day you can see the skyline of Charlotte. Chimney Rock is another worthwhile Mountain location. A lot of good hiking, views, waterfalls, etc. There is some great canoing up there too.

I second the Doc's Harper Creek recommendation.

Another good hike is Crabtree Meadows. It's also a national park campground if you are into that.

if you plan to go to mt mitchell bring coats...i went in june and there was still snow on the ground...its the highest peak east of the mississippi

Head south on the parkway..go to Mt. Mitchell..BEAUTIFUL!!..also got hiking trails, a nice diner and gift shops..Everyone else told you about the other great places to go..lol.

Hebron Rock Colony is a blast if your boys are old enough to do a little climbing. Best way to describe it is a giant pile of boulders over a waterfall. Not very tall or wet :)

if the boys like outdoors..the climbing tower in downtown boone...they can learn to climb...so much per session plus shoe rentals..they have a web site...rock demisions..is the name of the company or footsloggers...go to the corner by the mast store and look down....the tower is on the left...lots of stuff around just let me know what you are looking for...i can help you find a place to stay also.

woodlands bbq in blowing rock is okay...living on past laurels...a lot of places up here do that...now there is a restaruant review...just google..ray,tom, boone restuarants..they will come right up. boone has most chains now..but still no mixed drinks..beer and wine only...i am sorry boone really doesnt have any great places to eat..peppers is living on past laurels...daniel boone inn is family style (they bring big plates of fried chicken etc to the table) it is pricey. most people eat at the sunrise grill...yes the place next to the putt putt green...but if you like the experience daniel boone is fun..get there early to avoid lines. most of these places have web sites..tweetsie is fun if the boys are of that age...make a day of it. take sunglasses for everyone..as one hazard of riding a steam train is burning embers...ride the 2nd car...right hand side...to see the most stuff at the fort..mystery mountain is a total rip off..its an optical allusion place..water runs up hill tha

tourist trap...if you like the arts..there is plenty to do...a tour of the murals in ashe county..they got the cheese factory....totally lame...the tour is watching a guy run his arm thru crud. ...i swear..you cant make this up ...lol..someone mentioned thunder hill...on the parkway....nice place...nice trail across from main parking lot...its great to watch storms move in ...the thunder rolls up the hill...thus the name..and no better place for kite flying...dont forget kite flying ...just make sure you get a kite that will fly...lots of bird watching if you are in to that..now if it rains...foscoe...family billards...no smoking ..no drinking....no rowdiness...there are some huslers in the day times...but they are minding their own business..the owner runs a family place...food and pool...small mall..very small mall...blowing rock is not that nice any more...but do sonny's grill..downtown...old fashioned grill...dont be shy if there are no tables..crowd right in...
