LODI, Calif. -- A wheelchair-bound elderly woman trapped on railroad tracks was saved by a stranger from being hit by an on oncoming train Saturday night, police said. Samuel Huffman, 20, was driving when he noticed Marguerite Jones, 82, lying on Union Pacific Railroad tracks at Locust Street in Lodi, officials said. Jones said she was crossing the tracks when her motorized wheelchair tipped over, causing her to fall off. Huffman rescued Jones just in time, according to the train's engineer, who said the two were so close to the train he thought they got hit.In fact, the train -- traveling around 40 mph -- missed Huffman and Jones by only 3 feet, police said. Lodi police Lt. Virgil Monroe, who was driving in the area, wittnessed Huffman pulling Jones from the tracks, he said. Both Jones and Huffman suffered no injuries, but police said Jones would have been killed by the train if not for Huffman's heroics. Jones' motorized wheelchair, however, was smashed into pieces.2 Comments
