dog whisperer

Published May. 12, 2008

As you know, I have horses and if you've read many of my blogs/comments, I train them using 'gentle and natural' training techniques.  That is, I try to consider how horses interact in a herd in the wild.  I try to 'see' the world through their eyes and I train them accordingly.  The first step is in establishing myself as the herd alpha mare.

Well, I also have a dog.  Abby is a great dog, but she has some 'issues' that drive me a bit nuts.  She jumps up on me (and others), she has no "table manners" with others in my house, though she knows to leave me alone at the table.  That's one of my biggest peaves with dogs.  DON'T beg at the table.

Long story short (from me? Yeah, right!), my sister-in-law suggested I read, "Cesar's Way" by Cesar Millan - Nat'l Geographic's Dog Whisperer.  I don't know why I wasn't receptive at first, especially since I practice the techniques with my horses.  But I put off reading the book for a while.

I finally started reading the book and have watched a couple of episodes of the show.  I have to say I'm impressed.  I have begun some subtle things with Abby, like ignorning her and putting her away from me when she jumps.  She's really beginning to listen and take the more submissive role.  I didn't realize that I was encouraging (or at least not disuading) the dominant role in her.

I plan to start re-asserting myself as the pack leader with her.  Already, in small ways, I can see improvement.  During the thunderstorm last night, she was much calmer.  Normally she wants to sit on top of your head during t-storms.  But I practiced "calm-assertive" with her and she laid down and, while not completely relaxed, was at least not climbing all over me and/or cowering in a dark corner.  She stayed in the middle of the room, alert, but relaxed.  It was good to see.

I'm enjoying the book.  I personally feel that learning to work with animals can teach us a LOT about interacting with people.  This book has been enlightening on that front as well.  I am experimenting with "calm-assertive" with my kids.  It works.

Anyone else read the book or watch the show?  What do you think about it?

I just got back from a 3/4 mile walk. It's the first 'walk' I've taken with Abby in a LONG time. I get out in the yard and play with her, but according to Cesar, I'm playing to her dominant personality. All the time I've done these things thinking, "Sure I give her exercise." But today, I made her "work" to earn her food. We walked (boy do I need it as much as her). Whenever she tried to take the lead, I called her back in and made her sit. Sometimes with words, othertimes with gestures. By the end of the walk, If I stopped and stared straight ahead, she would sit and then wait for me to continue walking. We walked different speeds and I zig-zagged and turned around a few times.

It's just funny to me that all these years I've worked with horses, I train according to THEIR natural instincts. But they are prey, not predators. It's not that I didn't understand the concept for dogs, I just didn't know how to apply it. It will be an interesting journey. I'm looking forward to it.

I like that show It's Me or the Dog on Animal Planet. I'll have to check this person out too!

I read "Cesar's Way" and "Be the Pack Leader", I enjoyed them both and learned a lot from them both. A couple I met at Richmond County C. OON Club in March suggested that I watch the show, but since I don't get cable where I live I read the books instead. I also receive his monthly newsletter. After that I read "The Other end of the Leash, Why we do What we do around Dogs" by Patricia B. McConnell (suggested reading) and that was a great book. Right now I'm reading "Be your Dog's Best Friend" by the Monks of New Skete (more suggested reading). I can tell the greatest difference in Savannah, but it's because of the change in my approach to her.

I'll have to see if I can find his book this afternoon at the Fed'vul B & N. That's a cool story with the salesman and the reactions. U like it. A dog can be your best friend in a lot of ways. Especially when you don't know who is at the door like that.

Cesar Milan has brought out the real issues between humans and canines. He has made the facts simple and concise. He has an understanding of canine behavior which many humans are not aware of. We humans keep trying to reinvent "nature", but it is well fixed. Yes, there is evolution occurring constantly, but we ignore much of what nature tells us. Abby looks to you for direction, and as the pack leader, you must assert yourself calmly but firmly. Dogs live in the now, so act accordingly. Don't let things "slide" until later. Allow her lots of excercise and interaction. Praise her good behavior. I use cherios as a reward. I toss them for her to catch as excercise as well as a ball. If I used anything larger, my dog would be big as a barn. EXCERCISE...DISCIPLINE...and AFFECTION....works.

South Park had an episode where the "Dog Whisperer" tried to train Cartman. It was hilarious.

Good Luck!

I recommend the book. He has a very interesting life and it's good reading whether you own a dog or not. It's interesting to see his perspective of the United States.

I love the show! Havn't read the book, but I need to.

My doorbell just rang. It's not usual for someone to come by unexpected. Abby jumped up and ran to the door, barking. I stood there and gave her my 'sound' and pointed to sit. She did. I opened the door and she remained there, beside me, calm, but visible (a good trait when opening a door to strangers). It was a salesman and after he left, I shut the door, waited for Abby to react. She was waiting for ME to react. Since she was sitting there calm, I patted her and told her good girl. She went and laid back down.

I SO glad my SIL referred this book. I'm really enjoying it.

I have been forced to submit on occasion and secretly enjoyed it. I like to smell the glove.
