what would you do???

Published May. 12, 2008

I received this email from one of our neighbors..

Your driveway is frequently empty. Park your car  in it and be a better neighbor  than parking at the  end of my driveway.. I need frequent access out for health issues Barbara H.

I could write a response, but I might get "slightly" sarcastic so I need some Golo advice.  We live in a cul-de-sac and have a single driveway.  All of the areas not taken by a driveway in our circle have a mailbox.  Because I leave in the morning before my boyfriend, I park my car behind his truck in our driveway.  If I happen to get home before my bf and if the mail has not come, I will park my car on the straight portion of the road (can't block the mailbox or the mailman gets pissy).  Most often I am able to park in front of our mailbox. Barbara's house is across from where I will park if I can't park in the driveway or in front of the mailbox.  She has plenty of room to get her car out. So I want to keep parking across from her house out of spite. What should I do?

My car is parked by her driveway maybe 2-3 times a month at the most.

Do I respond to the email? Talk to her in person? Or keep parking my car on the street?

I have to side with the neighbor. Park it in the yard, that's what we do. We have the same small cul-de-sac situation. The ultimate solution is to widen your driveway, cost permitting.

Let him nail one of them. It would be their fault for blocking a driveway, which is an infraction.

The response should be...

"Thanks for your concern - but since we are adults and you know how to drive and you have done a darn good job so far... Pi ss off."

Better to avoid proablems.Park in your yard.Sounds like she could stir up trouble.

I am kind of on the other side of this situation. I don't live on a cul-d-sac but my neighbors across the street have lots of visitors that park on the street. There is lots of room for them to park but they always seem to park right at the end of my driveway. We have three of us driving at my house and no one has a small car. When my son first started driving I panicked that he would back into one of them. I left them a nice note on their mailbox and essentially told them that I was concerned that one of us might accidentally hit one of them and asked that they be a little more considerate. This worked for the guys mother that would come and leave her car there for a week at a time but most of the others still park there. It's irritating when I have to go around the block because I can't get out and turn the right way but I just consider it the price of living in a neighborhood.

...take her some baked goods and apologize for not knowing you were impeding her egress. Play musical cars with your boyfriend if you need before bed. If she doesn't accept your neighborliness....get her a book on being a good neighbor.

If it only happens 2 - 3 times a month, why is it such a big deal to move your car if you're parked behind your boyfriend (or vice versa)? Parking in the street in any residential neighborhood can be a hazard for people driving in, getting in and out of driveways, etc. - whether you think so or not, others may not be as skilled a driver as you and perceive it as such.

Just my two cents, but if you're parked in the street and you have a perfectly good driveway with space for your car, you have no right to complain when others ask you to move.

what are GNO's? Take sue's advice...work out the stuff you can...sometimes working out the small stuff ...will keep the big stuff from really getting out of hand.

Invite her over to watch Dr. Phil with you.
