my cat - big mac
Published May. 12, 2008
Big Mac got out yesterday and I cannot find him anywhere. I'm so upset...he is one of 2 cats we adopted 8 years ago. He is 10 years old. He has never been outside. He was born in the foster home I adopted him from when they found his pregnant mama and he lived there for 2 years before we adopted him.
He has never even tried to get out. The only thing I can think of is that we went out last night and he somehow ended up outside during the hustle and bustle of getting our kids out the door. When we got home, he didn't come running like he normally does. I was up and out all night looking for him. I left his favorite food outside but he hasn't come back.
My son is going to be so upset and he knows I'm sitting here crying all morning. He keeps asking why but I haven't told him yet. I don't know what to say! I don't know what to do or where else to look.

My dog has a slave collar that alerts her when she gets to the perimeter of the yard and will shock her if she goes too far. The neighborhood kitties love our yard and come in the yard to hang out. When my dog chases them (for fun, not snack food), they run to the other side of the line, then sit and sing "Nannee Nannee Boo Boo!" They know exactly how far that dog will go. Evidence of intelligence to me, especially the singing!

There is a neighborhood cat named Oberon who pretty much lives here. Everyday for about a month now right at four pm, he sits on the perimeter of my yard just waiting. Waiting for what? Apparently he almost got a bird and presumes that it will come back so if he just waits there in the same place at the same time, he has a shot at eating the thing. Csts: Persistant, but amazingly stupid. But I repeat myself...

Yep. That's what they do...which is exactly as they please.

My cat is and indoor/outdoor cat who rarely leaves the yard. He's pulled the hoodini act a couple of times while never being out of earshot. I know he could hear me. Both times he was a little freaked out and simply hid away until HE was ready to come out.

Keep in mind that cats are very close to the wild animals they once were and haven't really changed a whole lot since the Egyptians tamed them. They're hardwired for the outdoors.

That is why I always observed the rule of positive engagement especially when doing laundry. Just because you don't see them in the dryer does not mean that they are not in there. Before you turn it on, always get positive confirmation that they are in another part of the house destroying things. And some cats can get anywhere. I had one who learned how to open the refrigerator and we found her inside making a pig out of herself. Complete darkness and cold didn't phase her at all as long as there was food she could snarf.
