would you try to get out of it?
Published May. 11, 2008
So, a week or so ago (interestingly enough, right after one of my toughest finals) I was involved in an accident with an older gentleman (est. 1940). He merged into my lane without checking to see if I was there and just side-swiped my car.
Now, this man had his wife in the car. Both wrote narrative statements similar to mine, assumingly, as the police report read as the incident truly happened. Moreover, this man apologized several times and at the very end, had the audacity to say, "God bless you." (You'll see why this statement was so audacious later.)
So, I call my insurance agency right after the police left, gave them my and the only witness's contact information, and left it at that.
That Monday (the accident occurred over the weekend), I get a call from his insurance agency. The agent wants to do a recorded interview. I comply. (Apparently mistake number one.) At the end, she reads the summary of his interview and states that there is a "difference of opinion" to a polar degree. Basically, both this guy AND his wife lied their pants off. So here I go, calling my mom (crying and irritated) right before my last and hardest final. I was so upset that someone could not only tell an utterly complete untruth--He didn't even attempt to manipulate the real truth. He and his wife just made up one of their own--but also that someone did so after utilizing the phrase "God bless you."
Needless to say, the police report and the witness proved this untruth-telling idiot wrong and his insurance agency (well his wife's company's insurance, apparently) is paying to have the damage fixed.
So, the question of the day, would YOU lie and try to get out of taking the hit (in regard to insurance payments) or would you tell the truth?

BTW, it will be a while before you feel secure driving again. I still get nervous when people pull up too close at a light.

The bottom line is, if someone is willing to sell their soul for the price of a fender, there isn't much you can do about it.
