would you try to get out of it?

Published May. 11, 2008

So, a week or so ago (interestingly enough, right after one of my toughest finals) I was involved in an accident with an older gentleman (est. 1940). He merged into my lane without checking to see if I was there and just side-swiped my car.

Now, this man had his wife in the car.  Both wrote narrative statements similar to mine, assumingly, as the police report read as the incident truly happened.  Moreover, this man apologized several times and at the very end, had the audacity to say, "God bless you." (You'll see why this statement was so audacious later.)

So, I call my insurance agency right after the police left, gave them my and the only witness's contact information, and left it at that.

That Monday (the accident occurred over the weekend), I get a call from his insurance agency. The agent wants to do a recorded interview.  I comply. (Apparently mistake number one.)  At the end, she reads the summary of his interview and states that there is a "difference of opinion" to a polar degree.  Basically, both this guy AND his wife lied their pants off.  So here I go, calling my mom (crying and irritated) right before my last and hardest final.  I was so upset that someone could not only tell an utterly complete untruth--He didn't even attempt to manipulate the real truth.  He and his wife just made up one of their own--but also that someone did so after utilizing the phrase "God bless you."

Needless to say, the police report and the witness proved this untruth-telling idiot wrong and his insurance agency (well his wife's company's insurance, apparently) is paying to have the damage fixed.

So, the question of the day, would YOU lie and try to get out of taking the hit (in regard to insurance payments) or would you tell the truth?

I'm like Rocknhorse... if I even THINK about trying to lie, I already have the guilty look on my face. No need to try, so best to try and do things the right way and avoid trouble!

What where their names? Sounds like my in-laws. In that case, they will win $$$$ big time. My in--laws, ,professional cons.

no i pretty much take the fualt if its mine. I had something similar happen. A four car pile up where a car hits me...pushes me into the car in front of me...then another car rammed the one that hit me..and chain reactioned all over again....my car was totalled...the guy who hit me..lied...the hwy patrol station was closed due to moving..my insurance company paid me and sued him...no need to fear the recorded interview...as long as you are telling the truth...the recording does nothing but help.

I tboned a sprint truch by running a red light. my bad. i swear the one witness saying it was my bad...looked just like aunt bee...pearls and all..policelady ask me ....was it your fualt...i am like...."am i going to call that lady a liar...police lady..."good call" ...old people amaze me....i turned in a guy for hit and run in a parking lot...he just bashes this suv and takes off..the tells police..he didnt think i had time to get his plate number.

No, I would not lie. Karma has a way of coming around and kicking you in the whatsis.

Whatelseisnew, my company wouldn't help me one bit. I'm seriously considering thinking about switching agencies. Though, I'm hoping I was just dealing with a new-hire.

Oldschool, it is the internet. Typically, you'll find that people are more honest when you can't physically see them.

Many years ago I was rear-ended at a red light. The impact caused my entire back window to shatter plus move my trunk much closer to the back seat. The driver actually began to yell at me and say that it was my fault because I wouldn't turn right on red. A witness came to my rescue and produced a cell phone (weren't many around in those days) to call the police and the man quit yelling. Thank God for witnesses who will come forth.

BTW, it will be a while before you feel secure driving again. I still get nervous when people pull up too close at a light.

Did you really expect anyone to say "Yep, I'd lie my but off"?

The bottom line is, if someone is willing to sell their soul for the price of a fender, there isn't much you can do about it.

Definitly would tell the truth.

I would not lie. If I were concerned that my insurance would go way up, I would have offered to pay for your damages out of pocket. By the way, what they did was to attempt to commit insurance fraud. They might find that their company ends up dropping them. I would not be surprised if your company did not let their company know what they tried to do. I am no legal expert but it seems to me they could go after this person if they wanted to do so. Sorry you ran into a couple of jerks.
