blog: martin goes to mount everest

which of the most common risks of climbing mount everest would discourage you the most?

Published May. 11, 2008

On theWebEx site, I posted a poll that asked this question. Overall, out of the 29 people who voted, the most discouraging risks were: climbing over crevasses on ladders, and lack of oxygen, which each got about 41 percent of the votes. Unpredictable weather was the next, and the threat of avalanches got the least number of votes. I just put up a new poll today asking what would motivate you to climb Mount Everest. Guests can vote, so I want to know what you think! (There is a link to the WebEx page on the Martin homepage- http://martinms.wcpss.net/. Once you get to WebEx, click "Enter as a guest".)

i am too old to undertake this type of adventure. What would discourage me the most? Knowing that is someone falls ill..I would have to leave them there to die. I could not image having that responsiblity to walk away from a human that could be saved if not for the location.

There is no possible motivation I can think of. Kudos to Chip. He's my hero! -Angela

No thanks..I am terrified of heights!

I can't believe no one mentioned lack of cell phone coverage. No bars at all ! ! !

I've heard that once you get there, to the top, there are no accommodations, not even a drink machine.

Joking of course, but the thing with me, even if I were young and fit, and had that much money to spend on recreation, and was willing to be gone from my family that long, IS that I don't have the wanderlust or curiosity or desire to even want to make the climb or be there by any means. Climbing El Capitan would be more fun, but I don't want to do that either. the challenge of conquering nature isn't in me, I guess.

If there is snow and I have a choice, I will avoid it at all costs. That is all I need to know to keep me from attempting to climb Mt. Everest. Snow. Cold. Brrrr!!!!!

There is no way in the world I would go climbing, especially with snow...Just nothing would get me up that mountain....

Oooh -- threat of avalanches.

The lack of oxygen. I panic when I can't get my breath.

The fact that I could get left up there if I die discourages me. Oh, and the cold. I hate snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
