i'm tired of paying for eggs!

Published May. 11, 2008

Does anybody out there own hens?

I'm trying to figure out which is cheaper, paying for eggs, or would I come out better if I got three or four hens?  Yep, my boys eat a lot of eggs.  No, I do not plan on eating the chickens.

Any advice?

We used to have silky Bantams -- they kind of look like the miniature French poodles of chickens. The rooster crowed but not loud enough to bother anyone. They laid cute little white eggs.

We kept a variety of chickens and the Rhode Islands were the most dependable for eggs.

Smorgas, please don't tell me that! I don't want a noisy rooster,

Is it true that hens won't lay eggs if there is no rooster around? Always heard this when I was growing up from the old folks.

All this talk of eggs makes me want a breakfast dinner. Our "Fam" never has time in the morning for a good sit-down breakfast. So I fix a big killer breakfast about once a month. You guys just helped me with tomorrow night's dinner.

I'm not sure how long they live. When they get real old they stop laying.

Sounds like a great idea! Might try that myself.

We buy our beef by the side...it's not only cheaper, but the quality is 100% better than store bought!

Laying mesh is what you feed chickens to help with laying eggs. Please don't ask me how this works i don't know but it does.

WhiskeyKel, I thought the Rhode Island Red was a rooster. "I say, I say, boy!!!" Hahahahaha!

How long do they live? I can't handle a dead chicken!

Get the Rhode Island Reds or Buff Orpingtons. They lay pretty brown eggs and are very friendly.

For what she has told me so far, apparently there are several different types of chickens. Some you raise to munch and others are raised to produce eggs. The feed she gets cost about $12 and lasts about a week. She has all sorts of chickens. The eggs are multi color, very tasty, makes killer brownies. You can taste the difference in fresh eggs big time. I think the life of a chicken is about 2 to 3 years. Also, save chicken doo doo, excellent for lawn.
