ask the painter

Published May. 11, 2008

I own a reputable painting company in Wake County.

I will be glad to give anyone here free advice.

If you have ever had a question about painting, procedures, materials, equipment, tools, what type of brush to buy, how much can I expect to pay?etc, I will be more than happy to respond.  This is not a solicitation for business! I have plenty of work.

Blackdog is absolutely correct. He is a professional as well!

...AV8R...to reduce the mess all landing on the floor plastic and tracking it out, use a plastic waste bucket to catch what you scrape into it. Also, you can hang the plastic on the walls with push pins. If your walls are wallpapered, use painters masking tape to seal against the water spray which could lift edges. If you do have any wallpaper lift, simply use a bit of water to wet the paper and some elmers white glue to reset the paper.

...the first and most important step to repainting is the primer. If you are trying to cover a dark color with a lighter color, simply prime the surface with white primer. Don't worry that it doesn't cover completely as the finish paint will. I suggest caulking cracks after the primer has been applied. It gives a better hold and the caulk is more akin to finish paint. Benjamin Moore and Zinnser both make top quality acrylic primers.

...since the original poster is MIA...I thought I would share over 30 years of experience....I'm not trying to steal his "Thunder"....just being neighborly...

...AV8R...cover the floor and walls with painters plastic. Wet the ceiling with warm water from a spray bottle and let soak a short while or until the popcorn scrapes off with a wide spackle knife. It is mainly gypsum. Once removed and dry, prime with an acrylic primer, let dry, then paint with ceiling white. Often in a wet or steamy area, you might want to use oil based finish paint. Unless you have no vent or use your bath for a sauna, an acrylic paint is fine.

So Paintpro. I do have a question. My house is 20 years old and in my master bath the spray on popcorn type treatment is pealing off. What is the easiest way to get it all off and repaint?

Dayum! - Got so flustered about Bones I forgot my question -- Just bought a single story red brick house and all the facia is painted dark brown. How do I cover the brown to paint it a lighter color. This will be a solo project and I ABHOR oil-based paint. Also, how much sould I budget for the job? Thanks for joining. It's nice to have a TRADESMAN in the community!

I echo MIA's call for a new feature!

Bones, I'm simply -- STUNNED -- While I'm not surprised to hear you painted your living roon red with a black undercoat, I've never seen this side of you -- so ..... fragile, so sweet, so VUNERABLE. Asking for help and all ..... *sniff* *sniff* Excuse me, I have to go compose myself ...

Could it be possible that your generosity will generate a new Golo feature down the road???? Sounds like a possibility to me!

help ...i painted the walls of my living room ...red...it has a black undercoat...dont ask...dont even ask....well i am really bored with the red...how do i cover it..
