600 students involved in campus wide racial brawl

Published May. 10, 2008

Has to be a frightening thing to have to attend school and worry about this kind of thing happening. Has to be even more frightening to send your child into a school where this has already happened...and could happen again. I feel heartache for the parents of children that have to endure this kind of violence in their schools. And with compulsory attendance laws, what choice do you have if you can't afford private school or home schooling?

"A fight that broke out at a troubled South Los Angeles school escalated into a campuswide brawl involving as many as 600 students before it was quelled by police in riot gear.

The melee, which students said started around noon Friday between rival black and Hispanic gangs, forced authorities to shut down Locke High School and keep students in their classrooms. After restoring order, they rounded up students who hadn't returned to class and separated them by race, holding Hispanics in the gym and black students in another room.

Four people were arrested, three students for fighting and one non-student on suspicion of possessing a knife, Los Angeles school district spokeswoman Susan Cox said.

Several students were injured and treated at the scene, but nobody was hospitalized, officials said.

Music teacher Reggie Smith described to the Los Angeles Times a chaotic scene where it was difficult to distinguish between trouble makers and those trying to avoid the mayhem.

"The kids were crazy, running from place to place jumping on other kids," Smith said. "Some of my kids were crying because they were walking to class with friends and they got jumped."

Victor Wong, an 18-year-old senior, told the Times the melee grew out of a fight two days earlier between two graffiti gangs. He said Hispanic students who are friends of his asked him to participate in a fight planned for Friday that was to pit 10 Hispanic students against 10 black students.

The two groups met as planned at the handball courts, but the fight quickly spread throughout the campus, Wong said.

"Security didn't know where to go," he said. "They'd concentrate in one spot and something would happen somewhere else."

School district police brought in about 60 officers to the scene, while the Los Angeles Police Department dispatched about 50 officers and more than a dozen patrol cars.

Ronald White, a 17-year-old senior, said that when police arrived some of the students began fighting the officers, who responded with their batons. Another student said he saw police use pepper spray.

Locke has been marred by almost daily fights during much of the academic year, but students and teachers said Friday's brawl was the worst in years.

Joseph Sherlock, a senior, called it "my first actual encounter with a riot."

About 65 percent of the 2,600 students enrolled at Locke are Hispanic, and 35 percent are black."

"Suspending kids like that does no good but give them a holiday and make the parents suffer"

What parents? The only parents that suffer from these kids are the parents that have the misfortune of encountering them during their holiday. (sperm and egg donors don't count as parents)

I could home school. I am certified to teach K-6. But I could not do it without help I'm sure. I could not support myself and the 2 kids with no income.

Wonder what % of the 65% Hispanics are illegal?

Suspending kids like that does no good but give them a holiday and make the parents suffer. We need school jails. Lock them kids up in separate cells and feed them nothing but water and prunes.

I knew I'd seen something of this somewheres.Thanx elcid..I'd either read something or heard a talk show on Savage Nation about it. So I guess it's always been there on the books, they're just now enforcing it with a passion. Big government doesn't want the people to exercise any kind of power. Power corrupts...absolute power corrupts absolutely.

welcome to the world. you can have it

"If I'm not mistaken I read where California ha recently made a law where all home school instructors must be certified as teachers, effectively squashing the home school movement in that state."

They didn't recently make a law. It's the same law that's been on the books since the 1950s. Parents had been getting around it (illegally) through a variety of methods and nobody ever really pushed the issue. Now someone has.

You can read about the case here:

I love the picture of the peace lily.

Lady, at the middle school where my oldest went, there were so few whites, there weren't enough to make a percentage. There were maybe 10 whites in grades 4-8. On my son's grade, he was the only white boy and there were 2 white girls.

We were lucky enough that I could move my son to another school and NO it wasn't because of the race difference, it was because Of the gang difference. The kids at the old school were trying to get into gangs and they were already having babies. And wanting to steal everything that could get their hands on and loved to fight.

Glad i don't have kids.
