need help with baby bird ...

Published May. 9, 2008

I rescued this baby bird from the mouth of a cat tonight and I'm not sure what to do with it. As for now, I have it in a box with moss. It doesn't seem to be injured but maybe in shock? It's old enough to fly but hasn't yet learned how so if I can get it through the night, I'll try putting it in the yard tomorrow, supervised, of course. But what should I do until then? I'm trying to feed it water with an eyedropper but with no success. Any advice .... please? Thanks!

Sue and Brat - thanks!! But ..... when I tried to catch him tonight, he was scared and hopped away really fast. He was under a bush and took off away from it. So, I put a couple of hanging ferns at the edge of the bush and sort of scooted him back under it. I'm hoping the ferns will offer more protection. I just came in - early evening is when most of the stray cats come to eat and I tried to keep them from OLG-B's area - but then I got both posts telling me to bring him in. Now, it's too dark to find him ...

The parents (still can't figure out why there is three of them) fed him all day long. Thanks again!!

Juli, I posted this on your profile too, but for those who might be in a similar situation and are following:

Just got a reply from my brother re: the morning update. He advises AGAINST trying to feed cat food to a baby bird. He says: "The period during which a baby bird is on the ground is usually just a couple of days-- he should be flying very soon. There is absolutely no reason to bring the bird to wildlife rehab-- what he's doing is normal for a baby bird. Bringing him in for another night is probably okay-- IF she can catch him without causing undue stress, AND she leaves him alone and doesn't try to feed him again."

Juli -- ya doin' good, girl!

The in-at-night thing sounds like the trick. Got a phone # off the web and called a reabber in Johnston County but it went to voice mail. 919-922-1560. Hit the search engines if you're not in JC.

Yeh, it is messy feeding them until you get the knack. I finally hit on a pen w/ the ink barrel removed. Picked up moist pieces of kibble, then - down the hole! Fed Lazarus with that for 6 weeks...

Thank you Angela for putting this on the homepage - what a thoughful thing to do. And I appreciate the 'homage' to Lazarus from Juli and Sue. He was a rasal!

Good Luck. Keep posting. and, -- you can call me Brat.

OMG, gotta go!!!! I hear the ice cream truck!!!!!!!

http://www.piedmontwildlifecenter.org/ This is the organization I used when we had a baby groundhog turn up in our yard that was injured by our dog.

Ashen - the baby bird is still there - he can hop but he apparently can't fly. The rehabber (Sherry C) in Wilmington works full time and can no longer accept birds. If you know of someone I can call, please let me know. If I can't get him somewhere, maybe I should try bringing him inside at night and back out through the day? I do not have a safe place in this entire yard.

Good morning, Juli, that's great news!! I'm glad the feeding part worked out; it buys you time to figure out what to do next.

Look around the area where you first found him. see if you can find the nest and place him back in it, or in a high "nook" in a tree near there if their nest is high.

Ashen, Just like Sue said, as soon as I took the bird outside this morning, he started chirping and his parents flew down and started feeding him. Wonder what they thought about that cat food all over him? The problem today is I have to keep the stray cats away so I've been on "guard duty" this am. Should I still try to get in touch with the rehabber?

We had the same situation before and found someone to take him. We were in Durham and called the emergency vet office on Chapel Hill Blvd. They called someone from Chapel Hill that has a group that rehabilitates birds and they came and got him.

That rehab you found in Wilmington may be the one I told you about. I can get you in touch with her if you still can't get hold on the phone.
