would one of you more enlightened golo'ers explain this to me?

This isn't going to be one of those 'aw gee, can't we all get along?' blogs.
It's not even a 'now you all should be ashamed of your behavior!' blogs.
Fact is, sometimes people just don't get along. There are misunderstandings, there are times when people get all riled up and get their panties in a wad, I dig that.
What I really want to know about isn't any of that. That's just human nature.
What I need for one of you to clarify, in a nonspecific way that does NOT refer to any particular member/s of golo, or to any specific incidents on golo...
Why the hell do people stir shit for no apparent reason?
I read here quite a bit. Maybe I read here too much sometimes.
I have followed a reasonable number of bun fights in the months I've been a member here, and I just do NOT get it. What is the payoff for stirring shit?
Do people get so bored sometimes that instead of having even a heated debate, they choose instead to take the very low road and start up blogs that then beget other blogs, that further beget others, and so forth until I'm reminded of that long passage in the Bible where we learn about who begat who and somewhere in there it all gets completely convoluted and you have no idea about that family tree?
But I digress.
My real point here is... well, explain it to me. What's the need? Can people not think of any sort of substantive postings, so they go for the jugular? If so, why do you suppose these things happen?
I have my own theories, but I am very interested in what you all think.
