water rate increase doesn't float ...
Published May. 9, 2008
I heard on the news that water rates in the Triangle are going to go up BECAUSE ..... people are not using as much water nowadays!
Yes indeed. The g'ment mandated water saving devices in facilities all across the area, installed low-flow faucets and shower heads all over the place, made it a punishable offense to water your lawn. Gov Easley has deputized our kids in a public campaign to find new and responsible ways to use and manage the state water resources. And all this is good, and to my view, overdue.
But now the Water Companies are saying their revenues are down so they have to raise rates to get the revenue back. I say ... money is as finite a resource as water. You - YOU , the water companies - must also learn to conserve! The public has risen to the challenge of budgeting their water use: They should not be punished for their efforts, but should realize the expected rewards, one of which is monetary.
It is counter-intuitive that as demand for a commodity decreases, the price should increase. If that were the case, why should we try and reduce our use of oil and gas? No, if the demand goes down, the price should go down, or at least not increase. Economics 101.
I challenge the public utilities to look at their use of revenue and find ways to cut back on their expenses. The consumers have done it, and apparently done it well. Now it's the utility companies' turn to get realistic.

AND THAT is the BIGGEST problem with any and every gov't entity. They never reduce their budget. They never look to see what isn't working, they never review or rethink. It's always ADD ADD ADD ADD ADD

Takes 1 cup of outrage, and 2 TBSP of determination. Bake in public opinion oven until firm.
