washingtonpost.com wants identities of readers who post comments

Published May. 8, 2008

Just thought I'd share something I read today. I thought some of you might find it interesting as well. It's from washingtonpost.com

LOS ANGELES--If Jim Brady had his way, there would be no guaranteed anonymity for those who post comments to Washingtonpost.com.

Brady, executive editor of The Washington Post's online division, said during a panel discussion at the Digital Hollywood conference here that he would like to see a technology that could identify people who violate site standards--and if need be--automatically kick them off for good.

Brady has a notable history with this issue and I'll get to that. First, his position must be made clear. In an interview following the panel discussion, Brady said he doesn't want people's personal information for any other reason but to hold them accountable for what they post. He said he's not--as he has been accused by some--an enemy of free speech. He just wants to oversee a site where readers engage in civil discourse and debate without fear of it degenerating into a "back alley environment."

"I think part of the problem is that people aren't held accountable on the Web," Brady said. "People say things online they would never say when disagreeing with someone at the dinner table. I think heated debate is fine, but when there are (flame wars), many people won't take part for fear they will be attacked and bashed over the head with the (Internet-equivalent) of a steel pipe."

Brady knows how intensely many Internet users disagree with him. He made headlines in January 2006 after shutting down the comments area of a blog where outraged readers gathered to rebuke the Post's ombudsman, Deborah Howell.

Following the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal, Howell erred when she said that the lobbyist gave campaign donations to Democrats as well as Republicans. Abramoff gave only to Republicans. The paper's Web site saw more than 1,000 comments, many from people who accused the Post of conspiring with the Republicans.

Things got worse when Howell posted a clarification. When Brady saw that many of those comments violated the paper's policy against the use of profanity or personal attacks, he blocked users' ability to post. The decision was widely criticized. In defense of his decision, Brady wrote that many of the posts weren't comments at all, but the kind of thing "you might find carved on the door of a public toilet stall."

I reminded Brady that many people feel strongly about their right to privacy online. He responded that he feels strongly about it too, but there are plenty of sites that take an anything-goes approach and that people who want to drop F-bombs and blast each other should go there. "We don't want our site to be sanitized, but we have the right to create a different kind of community," Brady said.

Brady also lamented that closing user accounts doesn't keep bad eggs off a site. They just come back and create new ones. He said that his site can identify someone's IP address, but it's not an elegant solution because blocking them can be tricky. "You don't want to end up blocking the entire Department of Energy or something like that," he said.

Brady believes that in the next five years people will be required to identify themselves in some way at many sites. "I don't know whether we do it with a credit card number, a driver's license or passport, but I think making people responsible would raise the level of discourse."

I think I'm pretty straight forward here. Anyone who has followed my house project either knows who I am or could figure it out very quickly. I wouldn't have a problem giving the managing co. my info. I learned a long time ago not to say something I wouldn't be willing to say to someone's face.

Angela when you had problems with people coming on, trolls so to speak, you had a blog of suggestions on how to curtail these so called bloggers. I think having valid information with a valid email address would stop people from feeling they were beyond reach, anonymous if you will. I think this is a great idea!

I agree with Sue and vicariously with Chill. I tend to be more careful with comments here than I would in person and don't believe someone should use a keyboard as a shield. Nuff said.

I agree with Chill, and I don't see it as a security risk. Unless I am misinterpreting, it doesn't look to me as though people's information would be available to other posters--only to those managing the site.

We really have enough of our privacy taken away as it is...I might not post if I had to be 'visible'. It simply is not safe anymore. Perhaps it would be a far better investment for 'them' to initiate a wave of honor, respect, and compassion for fellow humans.

IP address...duh. "They" (those that Michell Obama speaks of) know who you are! RUN! BE AFRAID!

Bring it on! If you not scared or ashamed of your opinions you shouldn't have a problem with it. People need to realize that where ever you go in life the're are rules and regulations. Wether it's home, work, internet, bar or amusment park. There are rules that must be adhered to. As adults, we should be able to voice our opinions and beliefs without having to be subjected to clicks, posses, and ignorance. I should be able to read a comment and disagree with that persons opinion and state my reasons why, without my family being threatened, or being called outside of my name, or told that because my opinion differs that I have some type of mental disability. However, if that is your belief it shouldn't bother you that people know who you are, and what you stand for.

I am pretty open - just see my username. I don't say things on here that I don't and haven't said to people in person.

Yet you will never be able to get what he wants. The bad eggs will always be able to hide. The technology is just changes to fast to stay up with how people can get around your security. Then you end up putting and extra burden on exactly the type of people you wanted to attract.

The best way to combat it is with a tight set of moderators that can see a developing situation and act accordingly.

That is interesting...

I think I conduct myself on here as I do in person. Though in person I may be a bit naughtier around some people and not as much around others :) Got my "Mommy Mode" and my "Friends Mode"

Everybody already knows who I am, I have nothing to hide anyway. But I do not think that it would be fair to force someone to ID theirself just to post a comment.
