There are three options in North Carolina for unaffiliated (independent) voters. You may choose to vote in the Republican primary, the Democratic primary, or you may vote only on ballot initiatives (such as bond issues) and non-partisan judicial races. Three distinct ballots were available at every voting site.

Not entirely accurate. Most all states also imposed minimum limits of freehold worth, so it wasn't really intended to be the democratic "we're all just one great big happy family" utopia that it's portrayed as in retrospect. They fully intended, as their writings attest, that power would be decided and exercised by the elite.
Of course, that doesn't sell very well in today's market.

I guess I'm looking at it from a point of, if I'm really excited about a particular candidate and I would like to show my support in their primary, I should be able to.
But I understand what you are saying and it makes sense
