meet, "tarheel army mom" | the golo profile
Published May. 5, 2008
This week we have the pleasure of getting to know a little bit more about esteemed GOLO member, "Tarheel Army Mom." She adamantly supports the President and isn't afraid to tell you why. We had a chance to chat last week, and the conversation went like this:
Angela: You mention on your profile page that you support our troops and have no tolerance for those who do not. Why?
Tarheel Army Mom: As you know, I support the president and I 100% agree with going into Iraq because I honestly believe it was the right thing to do after 9/11 to protect the future of America.
Angela: Do you find it hard to argue that point?
Tarheel Army Mom: I do. But before GOLO I didn’t have an opinion of politics.
Angela: You’re kidding!.
Tarheel Army Mom: I know…. I’ve heard that. Lightfoot told me I sure have come to dislike liberals in 6 months. GOLO has been my history class that I didn’t pay attention to in high school. I’ve learned a lot.
Angela: Tell me some of the things you’ve learned.
Tarheel Army Mom: It has definitely made me diverse. I think most of my comments were made out of being shocked because before GOLO, my world was so small. It has diversified me and I don’t know how to deal with that except to say that they’re wrong and I’m right.
(We laugh.)
Angela: Don’t you see how important that is? To have diversity?
Tarheel Army Mom: I do. In fact in the last week I really took a look at myself because someone told me that I’d become a “nasty-right-wing person.” And I don’t want to be that way because I do care what people think.
Angela: So in your self-evaluation did you determine that they were right?
Tarheel Army Mom: Well…yeah. Sort of. I did. I guess I look at things in general Republicans in general, Democrats in general and liberals in general and everyone fits in their own slot.
Angela: So you don’t deal much in gray areas?
Tarheel Army Mom: No. And it’s made me look at myself and see that maybe it’s
because I don’t want to offend.
Angela: Can’t you converse without offending?
Tarheel Army Mom:Yes, I’m very civil.
Angela: So who’s your favorite GOLO liberal?
Tarheel Army Mom: (Laughs) It would have to be yeahright3 and djm and T-man. I’m very civil with those guys.
Angela: And who are your conservative buddies?
Tarheel Army Mom: Tmedlin is one.
Angela: What about Steve Crisp?
Tarheel Army Mom: Steve Crisp for President!
Angela: Tell me something shocking about you.
Tarheel Army Mom: I’m not as conservative as people think I am.
Angela: Why do you think you’re seen that way?
Tarheel Army Mom: Well….my blogs and my posts but I do stay away from certain topics.
Angela: Tell me something about you most people wouldn’t know.
Tarheel Army Mom: I’m a lot more bold online, than I am in person.
Angela: Don’t you think that’s true of most people?
Tarheel Army Mom: I do, but some say they’re the same no matter what.
Angela: Come on, tell me something else.
Tarheel Army Mom: I met my husband on the internet.
Angela: Now we’re talking. When? Give details.
Tarheel Army Mom: I met him 10 years ago on Yahoo. My name was “Gina’s here” and his name was “Redneck Ray.”
Angela: And that was somehow tantalizing?
Tarheel Army Mom: Yes. My mom always said I was a bum magnet. She said if there was a bum within a 25 mile radius I’d find him.
Angela: (Laughs.) That’s hilarious!!
Tarheel Army Mom: But my husband’s not a bum, he’s great.
We met in April of 1998, started talking on the phone, named our children, made our goals and by Memorial Day we were in a house together.
Angela: And you call yourself a conservative?
Tarheel Army Mom: (Laughs heartily.) Only politically.
Angela: How do you explain that?
Tarheel Army Mom: I have a good judge of character and trust my intuition.
Angela: So when did you meet him face to face and what if he had been, well…less than attractive?
Tarheel Army Mom: I knew who he was as a person before I even saw him and I fell in love with his inside. And the bonus is he was good looking.
Angela:I’m still shocked at this story
Tarheel Army Mom: Yeah, you see all of the negative ones on Oprah. There are three people in my office who met that way.
Angela:That’s how Smorgas of Borg met his wife, Sheba.
Tarheel Army Mom: Yeah and I think Yukon met his wife that way too.
Angela: How does one name their children with a man they’ve never met?
Tarheel Army Mom: We did a lot of talking for hours and hours on the phone. I just knew. We just knew. He was my soul mate. We knew we would get married, buy a house and have two kids.
Angela: What do your kids say about this?
Tarheel Army Mom: They don’t know. They’re only 8 and 9.
My older two know it. My parents are conservative in every way and they were okay with it because they know me and that I make good decisions.
Angela: Where do you see yourself one year from now?
Tarheel Army Mom: I see myself as a grandma for the first time and I’m only 43. My son is coming home from leave in September, He’s getting married, and 9 months later I’ll be a grandma.
Angela: There’s that intuition again.
Tarheel Army Mom: The probability is high.
Angela: If you could decide the next GOLO feature or tool, what would it be?
Tarheel Army Mom: I can’t say that I want anything more from GOLO. I’ve tried other places but there’s nothing like it for me. It’s friendly and interactive and I think it’s pretty good.
Angela: What do you want to say to your GOLO pals?
Tarheel Army Mom: Love ya, Mean it! (Pauses)
I love you all.
Angela: Even the liberals?
Tarheel Army Mom: Yes, I’m not that bad. My bark is a lot worse than my bite.
Angela: Alright Gina, it’s been fun.
Tarheel Army Mom: It sure has. Bye!
