i want another national holiday on the calendar...a worthy one

Published May. 2, 2008

If one were to list all the recognized holidays we have, the list would be quiet long.  Some of them are worthy to have, to celebrate, and to have off from work in honor of their observance. Included in that list are New's Year's Day, Martin Luther King's Birthday, Mother's day, Father's day,  Easter, Memorial Day, Fourth Of July, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

I've often wondered how the vast number of other holidays came into play, like Secretary's Day, President's Day, Valentne's Day, Halloween, etc., etc. I think one likelihood is that they were someone's idea that deemed profitable and became official. A lot of money is spent celebrating Valentine's Day, Halloween...and especially President's day. We pay dearly for the latter one by paying Federal workers to sit at home while the rest of us have to go to work. In my opinion, that one needs to be eliminated. Why treat the government employees to a paid day off when our tax dollars are in short supply already?

Now, for the real reason for my blog...I hereby want to declare one week out of the year to be designated as "Buy Only American-Made Products Week".  I'm thinking the first week in July would be an idea time to have it, as we celebrate Independence day right along with it.  Gosh what a boost that would be to our economy if everybody celebrated it by buying only products made in the USA just for one week!! Doing so would shed a beam of light onto just how much our buying habits really affect our economy's health. The week before would be the perfect time to buy stock in American-owned companies, and the week after would be the perfect time to sell that stock for a profit. Any takers on this new holiday?

I went shopping a few weeks ago to replace my bathroom scale (it's not what you think, my old one went to a preschool). I spent most of the day and visited 5 or 6 places. I couldn't find a bathroom scale that wasn't made in China.

Later, I tried to find some sleeves for my CD backups. Same thing. I never found one that was made somewhere other than China. I was going to use envelopes, but, you guessed it, they are also made in China.

You might as well call the Week, "Don't spend any money Week".

Harry and Nancy sure did it to the gas prices didn't they! I think they can stop now.

Maybe ole Abraham Lincoln is the one that began the ole saying, "The more the merrier".

I think Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi should be on there instead. they promised to do something about gas prices before the 2006 cycle. I am still waiting for them to do something.

Ah but you are missing the point Abe Lincoln is on the denominations of currency that you will have more often then others. Particularly after you buy gas.

I wonder what kind of honor and recognition ole Bush is gonna get down the road? I think it'd be ideal to put his face on every gas pump next to that tax per gallon stamp.

I love MLK day. It's always very close to my birthday if not the same day.

Talking about holidays, what do you think of a school system that has a military base with LOTS of military kids in the schools and they schedule school for that day? Hmmm...two weeks ago, some military people had a story about it in the local paper, were told that other counties would be in school on that day also, because of how legislature bound them between certain days, all sorts of excuses. Bus guess what??? We now have Memorial Day off...and will be in school the following Saturday. Granted it will be early release, but still...By the way, I looked at counties in NC that have military bases, my county is the only one with school scheduled. Counties surrounding us also had it already scheduled.

That's right, he got the penny and NO holiday for his birthday...

What a crock

and he'd be OLD!
