They don't force you to view ads with graphics;
You can use a POP3 client (such as outlook, Eudora, Thunderbird, etc.)
You get more than 6GB storage
Their spam filtering is the only one (that I have experienced) that really works.
So far (3yrs) I have not had 1 negative experience with Gmail.
