ideas for feeding a large group

Published Apr. 30, 2008

I live in the Chapel Hill/Durham area and need to make arrangements for about 100 people for lunch. What are some moderately priced restaurants (under $15) that can accommodate this large of a group?

FE. I understand and you are right sometimes my batteries are low in the early hours. I actually have a Progressive Farmers cookbook that was copywritten in the 40's that has a section with recipes for cooking for the crowds..... "cole slaw for 100" etc.... pretty funny. I think a catering outfit would be best for this situation..... Thanks for the info.

Shine - same applies. If you want to donate $100 to the Shrine Club because you support their cause, go for it. If you pay them $100 to "rent" their building, you HAVE received something in exchange and no deduction. Of course, if they normally rent it for $100 and you pay them $500, then you do have a $400 write-off.

Same applies to the Christmas trees you buy at the church, the goodies you get with your pledge to PBS, etc.

Hope this helps!

FE

Fe maybe I am wrong ... I was talking about a donation to the organization for use of the building..... the caterer would have to be paid.

Ah, Shine, you cannot deduct something you pay to a non-profit organization when you get something of value (like a meal!) in return.

Good luck with the IRS auditors, especially when they ask to see the "nothing of value was received" receipt from the tax-exempt organization!

You won't eat at anyone's corral for a $1.00 a person now.

There is not a doubt in my mind, I would go to "Golden Corral" based on what "grenlyn1" said. You will never beat paying under $1.00 per person. Beware, times have changed, they could be up to 92 or 93 cents per person by now. The menu is limited at these prices (a piece of toast and a pine float). You will have $1,400.00 left over from your food budget. You will be the hero of your group for saving money.

You could check a community building, or Kiwanis, Lions Club, facility and for a small fee or donation - rent it out - (tax deduct also because they are non profits). Bill Ellis BBQ use to cater alot of stuff for me --- 100 plates would prob. run 10 - 12 maybe more now with fuel prices.... His food (chicken and BBQ and the sides are always consistant. There are some others closer to you - but a catering outfit would be the way to go unless you are having an 'in and out the door' crowd. I live in Eastern (the real Eastern NC) - I have been to several events that were catered by the hospital kitchen staff - gives you a bit different menu other than chicken, seafood,BBQ and very well prepared and inexpensive.

When we plan events with large groups, some restaurants will discount the price of meals. Call the manager and inquire about it. So far, in 20 years I hae never been told no. Golden Coral once charged us $88 for over 100 people in a wedding party. All they can do is say no. Good luck!

Check out WRAL at 6am they have a cheap eats section, that looks really good. Also, try key words cheap eats on WRAL homepage. Not sure if it's online though. Good Luck!

Thanks, Angela. I knew that there would be an expert somewhere here!
