could use some advice...

I could really use some advice from anyone who may have more experience than me in this arena - which won't be hard because I'm 100% clueless in this.

I have decided to buy my daughter a digital camera as part of our graduation gift package. She keeps running off with mine. Everytime I need it, it is never there.

I'd like to spend no more than $300 since this is part of other stuff we are doing. But of course, get the best I can get for that. My camera was a gift from my parents, so I had no hand in picking it out. I've started looking on the internet for "reviews" and such.

Sony has some good cameras. Cybershot and Sure Shot are easy to use, in that price range and compact.

I just got the Sony Sureshot, or something like that. 8 megapix and 10x digital zoom. Get the fastest memory card. Got mine at Circuit City, Can't go wrong with this one. Small and gives excellent pics.

See if you can get a refurb Canon Rebel XT for at that price point. If you can, it is the best digital camera available for under $1,000. For non-professional cameras, I seem to remember one of the past six issues or so of Consumer Reports had a workup on digitals. Try the library for some back issues.

My brother got me a kodak easyshare for Christmas a few years ago. It has been dropped I don't know how many time, the lens cracked up and then taken out, and now it doesn't it "fit" together right, but it still does the job.

I have an Olympus E550 I think it is, but it was well over 300.00 so I can't help you. However it was money I wish I had spent years ago on it..................

Ahh, the Sureshot was one of the ones I've been sort of looking at and researching!

Thanks for these good tips everyone!

Had a Canon originally but it was dropped... I loved that camera. Went with a Kodak next but it just wasn't as good... Am on camera #3 now with an Olympus and it is ok... I miss my Canon though (didn't have the Rebel it is more camera than I need I had a powershot). Look for a pretty good amount of megapixels (you should be able to get at least 8 for $300) and the higher the optical zoom the better.

I like the Canon IS series, I have the 5. This is as close to a Digital SLR camera as a fixed lens can get. It has many features that are only available on SLR types without the price. My "pictures of fire on Solstice" gallery was taken with this camera, the functions on it allow me to take some very unique photos. It will run you around the price you are looking for. Has 12X optical zoom, with 4X digital. A great camera with the ability to take incredible shots.
