interesting read - "replacing the old guard"
Published Apr. 17, 2008Wine conossieurs believe that most great wines get better with age. Unfortunately, the decision makers of most industrialized countries don't see it that way when evaluating people. By 2050, the average age of the world's population is expected to rise from 26 to 36. Millions of American baby boomers will reach retirement age in the next 5 to 10 years. This aging of the population presents huge economic implications. Who will do the work in geriatric societies? Who will suport the increasing number of pensioners? What will happen to economic growth with a declining labor force?
For the past two decades the United States has been importing workers to increase the labor force. These workers supply important technical and scientific talent, start new companies, and help hold down prices by filling low-wage jobs. Even with this influx of foreign workers, the United States could experience labor shortages by 2010.
As critical as the impending labor shortage is, most companies are more concerned about the brain drain caused by experienced knowledgeable workers taking their irreplaceable knowlegde with them as they retire. For instance, Raytheon Vision Systems, a national defense contractor in Goleta, California, realized that more than 35% of its workforce would be elligible to retire by 2009. "In many situations, the person [set to retire] was the only one in the whole nation who knew how to do something. They invented it," says Marilyn Weixel, a senior human resource manager....
....Many industries and businesses are trying to keep potential retirees as long as possible by offering consultant positions, flexible work schedules, job sharing, and gradual retirement. The challenge is to keep mature workers on the job-- at least until they'be shared their knowledge with younger colleagues.
