some say dogwood festival is not being fair

"The crowd at a heated Fayetteville City Council meeting spilled out onto the street Monday night as hundreds of people came to speak against a Dogwood Festival policy barring religious and political booths.

Carrie King, executive director of the Dogwood Festival, said the policy prohibiting churches was created eight years ago. But organizers are strictly enforcing it this year after receiving complaints from people offended by churches and political candidates advertising their causes."

Here we go again. Seems ridiculous to me. Though I have no personal interest in religious affiliations, I see no reason why they cannot pass out literature/flyers.

We're going to "PC" ourselves right into the ground. It would seem we are moving from the principles of our "founding fathers" right back into an oppressive dictatorship society.

A "Brave New World" is closer than we think. Careful....Big Brother is watching. (And yes, I intentionally combined Huxley and Orwell. Maybe they were onto something.)

*Sigh*

I do think it's sad. Think of all the more pressing issues in the country today...and this is what we choose to fight over. Tsk tsk.

Why does it seem that the folks who take offense at a church distibuting literature are the same ones who take no offense at some Doomed alcoholic standing on a corner begging for money? Or a thousand screaming loons marching for some strange leftist cause? They are not offended by NAMBLA, the Animal Liberation Front, the idiots of Code pink, or the ravings of their Hollywood moonbat du jour.

But hold out a tract with the name Jesus Christ on it so that some passerby can take it and it literally becomes a federal offense.

Some feel this is having religion pushed onto people who want no part of it. Ironic that the entire festival revolves around one of the the great religious symbols, that being the dogwood tree. Talking about having something pushed down your throat, every time the dogwood is seen, there is the reminder of Jesus dying for mankind to bring about redemption. How must these individuals feel driving around and having to look at the beauty of the dogwood in bloom and seeing this "in your face" reminder. One would think for this festival to be truly free from religious symbols, that every dogwood tree in Fayetteville must be cut down. After all, that is what we are about, isn't it? We do not want to "force" anything on anyone. Too bad the forcing doesn't work both ways. No one would be forced to look at, accept, or even touch church literature at the festival if they have booths there. But alas, the easiest thing to do is just ban the churches participation.

Doesnt surprise me a bit. Unfortunately, our country is headed this way. It is a shame. All Christians/People of Faith should ban it if they do not reverse it. Hopefully, that would hurt their bottom $ line and hopefully their advertisers will not gain $1. This is an outrage! Too PC is right....if you don't like it...don't stop at the booth...

Let me also say that..all people of faith should ban each and every sponsor of the festival. Make sure they know why....do not give them any business and spread the word... this is going to be a true test of one's faith, I'm afraid. I only hope that the Christian's in that area step up and do the right thing and not just roll over and take it. Scream LOUD and eventually you will be heard!

I think part of the reason religious groups were excluded was that they were giving away items that other booths were trying to sell.

Also, those pamphlets were converting people on the spot.

If it isn't fair to others for the groups to be there, then it isn't fair to those groups to be excluded. If you don't want the stuff they are handing out, don't take it. No big deal.

Why are they distributing religious material at all? Are churches that desparate to "convert" others they have to hand them information at a public festival.

How about this, if I want to know about your church....I'll contact you. Not the other way around.

cartman...yes...if you saw someone walking in a fire, wouldnt you want someone to try and stop you?????????

they have the right, furtermore..

tis a shame.
