evolution of moral behavior

Published Apr. 12, 2008

A couple of weeks ago, Francisco Ayala gave a talk on the NCSU campus with this title.  Francisco Ayala is one of the foremost defenders of evolution in the US today.

In summary, he mentioned that in order to have morality, a species has to have evolved both biologically and culturally.  He mentioned three biological attributes individuals must have:

  • The ability to see the consequences of their actions.
  • The free will to change behavior (as opposed to instinct).
  • The ability to distinguish between right and wrong (or, good and evil).

The cultural parts were more numerous, and not as well defined.  The main one I remember is:

  • Have evolved a symbolic language.

The question he posed was what time in the past had these biological, then cultural attributes evolved?  I suspect it would be at about the same time as religion started to evolve.

He also wondered whether morality is selectively advantageous.  He brought up the usual example of the social insects.  While not moral by his definition, they do exhibit altruistic behavior.  They are the only species with haplo-diploid sex determination.  An interesting correlation.

Interesting ideas, particularly in this time as we look at the differences and commonalities among the world's religions in terms of morality.

There are very few 'pure' genetic traits. Most genetic traits are filtered through the environment.

I don't believe the actual morality is 'genetically determined', just the ability to have morality. Behaviors that were the norm some time ago are now thought to be immoral -- not because of biological evolution, but because of cultural evolution. I suspect that will change in the future, and some generations distant from today will look down on our behavior today as 'barbaric'.

I understand the cultural correlation to evolving morally, but are we genetically inclined to have certain behavioral traits? Wouldn't environment play into this also? Otherwise, criminals would be a product of their genetics without a hope of rehabilitation. In the case of serial killers, maybe they are genetically wired to do such acts; in such case I would have to say we are not evolving biologically towards morality (probably not culturally either).

As for those who apparently wish for a world free of religious influences..it ain't gonna happen. Get over it. There will always be religious influence in mankind affairs. It may be a fairly benign influence that "frowns on others for not following the precepts of that religion", or it may be the influence of a religion that cuts your head off if you are an Unbeliever. I think Unbelievers have it relatively easy compared to what conditions could be like for them. But..give it time..maybe something will come along that will make even the Unbelievers wish for "the good old days" when Blue laws were the worse you had to endure as a result of a dominant religious structure in the U.S.

...the problem with equating morality with religous influence is a use of morality for political power dominations usually from guilt donations. The recent payouts by the catholic church has had a negative effect on their finances ending programs and closing churchs. The more significant effect is the obvious hypocracy and evil intrusions. Religion is often just a "tool".

...there once was a warrior who turned off morality in his mind as he killed and killed in battle, in hopes of fighting such a fight, he might end war forever, as man would recognize its evil.

...and the point of morality has needs...before it becomes moral. If you spank your child to instill respect, it can prevent bloodshed as a gang member. Because you cared, you earned respect and created morality.

...man seldom recognizes real evil until it bites him, and then recognizes his error of sight. Then change can happen. With empathy, the people around you matter as well, because they affect you whether you want them too or not. They just do. Example : Post WW2 Germany, now doesn't like the thought of nazi, socialist or predjudice. They have an entirely different perspective of right wing or conservative...

I'm not sure of your point, blackdog. Please elaborate.

...there is no dark without light...as there is no light without dark...as there is no day without night...and there is no night without day.

I bypassed that picture when I s aw it on web before but I don't happen to believe in this theory of this person mentioned in this blog.
