greyhound racing: the "real" story

Published Apr. 4, 2008

I apologize for the repeat from last night, but only a couple people got to see it:

DeerSlayer got me upset with his picture this afternoon and I felt that it was time to show the plight of the greyhound, for those that don't know.

There are 100's (maybe even 1000's by now) of rescue groups in the US, Spain, Ireland, and the UK, but unfortunately a large number of the dogs never make it to the tracks.  They are killed at the "mills" that breed them because they show no promise to make money.

The following synopsis was taken from the website for the Humane Society of the US, however, there are MANY websites that have horror stories of how these poor souls are treated before, during and after their racing days:

Every year, the industry breeds tens of thousands of greyhounds, more than it can place at racetracks. This overbreeding is motivated by the desire to produce "winning" dogs. Thousands of greyhounds at each track are disposed of yearly to bring in a "fresh" group of dogs. A dog's racing career is usually over at 3½ to 4 years of age.

If able to live out his or her full life as a companion animal, a greyhound may live 13 or more years. Unfortunately, the industry kills greyhounds at various stages in the dogs' lives because they appear to lack racing potential or are injured. Many dogs, when they are no longer profitable, are adopted into good homes through rescue groups, but thousands are not. As with any business, profit is the bottom line; as a result, greyhounds are often destroyed using the least expensive methods, including gunshot. Reports of bludgeoning, abandonment, and starvation have also surfaced. Veterinarians humanely euthanize some greyhounds.

Adopt a greyhound, they DO make wonderful pets.  If you can't adopt, you can make a donation or sponsor a greyhound here:

This is sada but it also has been know for years becasuse that' s where the greyhound rescue came out of. I think it's kisgusting and that these owners showuld be shot...

GG, I dislike this sickening sport. The treatment of these animals is in no way similar to horse racing, nor is how their lives are ended. Thanks for the link. jack

I think my female was trained with live rabbits because she knew when there were rabbits in the area and would just "stare" in their direction...I could see her muscles tensing as she prepared to bolt at them. I had to be careful when walking her, when the rabbits were active.

My 2 "loved" cats...they would let cats circle in between their front legs, as they were sniffing the heck out of them. It was sooo cute!! LOL

lol...Libby was like a bullet chasing whatever squirrel crossed her line of sight...

Had a greyhound named Odie. Loved him. He hated cats or anything fuzzy. Guess it was his training.

I totally disagree with all animal racing.

My sister and her family adopted "Kosmo"...great dog, extremely well-behaved....no barking, calm etc for the most part.....scary fast when they are running though..

My oldest sister rescued one of these lovelies, and bless her heart, Liberty, (GREAT name, huh?) lived until this past autumn. Shameful the way animals are treated.
