I'm off to Williamsburg for the first time tomorrow afternoon.  Any "must see" places in the downtown area or really good places to eat?

I actually have the recipe for house we make it and it is close but not quite exact. Great on sandwiches but not good enough to just take a spoon and eat! I also love the Trellis, but have heard they have been going downhill lately. I hope not, one of my faves. Fat Canary (next to the Cheese Shop) is wonderful! Also love Sals... (the original one near the old Peebles!

"order extra house (and bring me back a pint with some bread ends!)"

Ahhhh! Every SUnday after church my sisters and I would walk to the cheese shop and get bread ends and house dressing! Cheap and wonderful! Last time I went back I still had to do it!

... the Cheese Shop for a sandwich... order extra house (and bring me back a pint with some bread ends!) Also lots of shopping outlets, the Pottery Factory (kind of cheesy but fun...) And my daughter's favorite the huge Yankee Candle store (she like to go in the "Christmas Room" where is snows... Have a good time. Not sure who is driving but we never go 64 or rt. 60, but skirt around Hopewell and come up route 5, very scenic drive (Plantation row!). Have fun.

I grew up in the 'burg, moved here 14 years ago. Still have family there and go 3-4 times a year. The Mongolian Grill mentioned earlier is actually Peking... One of my must go to spots when I am back. I agree, just walk around CW (Colonial Williamsburg) first, any shop that sells something is free as are a lot of other places. If you think there is really something you want to see than go back and buy a ticket (ie: Governors Mansion...) Of course for theme parks Busch Gardens! Jamestown and Yorktown are popular (lots of new stuff at Jamestown.) Short ferry ride to Smithfield... sounds like quite a crowd going so that might not be possible. I also went to W&M and would recommend walking around the old side of campus see if you can sneak a peek in the Wren building. It is on one end of DOG (Duke of Gloucester) street with the Colonial Capitol the other. If down in the Merchant's Square (on DOG street between W&M and the actual colonial section) and want a quick lunch go to...

I guess we have a lot of people from Williamsburg here! It's crazy to go back and see how much has changed! ! !

Like rabid said "Backfin" is also good!

The ghost tours are fun at night. . ."The Cheese Shop" is wonderful! ! ! Also. . ."The Trellis" is where death by chocolate was created! If you have kids. . .stop by "Wyeth" the candy shop. . .heck, stop by even if you don't (the candy apples are great).

DONT PAY THE ENTRANCE FEE..YOU CAN ACCESS MOST OF WILLIAMSBURG FOR FREE...YOU CANT ENTER CERTAIN SHOPS IS ALL....DONT PAY...ITS SUCH A RIP OFF...

I love Williamsburg. When my husband and I were young it was our cheap anniversary get away. Now we still go every year to take our children. If you are a history buff you will love Jamestown. Last year we went to the Carter plantation and it was really an eye-opener for my very sheltered children. We ate at a really nice Italian restaurant near Busch Gardens last year but I cannot remember the name! But I felt I was hanging out with the cast from the Sopranos!

Have fun.

The group won't be together for the whole trip, we just do one big meal together.
