hatteras closure

Published Apr. 3, 2008

Everyone who loves to access nature anywhere in the country pay attention to the court case this Friday, April 4th.  (http://www.newsobserver.com/front/story/1021824.html)  Long story short, some groups wish to press the courts to close access to Hatteras Island's most remote locations.  It is difficult to choose non-biased wording, but those who have *actually* been there to relax, fish, photograph, surf, walk, shell, etc. will concur that it is a special place.  This lawsuit, on the surface is about environmental protection.  At its fundamental root it is about one group using its financial position to force its will on a people and a place that have not done anything to deserve such impositions.  The native people of Hatteras have a long history, predating every current environmental organisation, of respecting the balance of nature on Hatteras Island.

Please, if you can send any kind of note of support for folks out there, do so.  Log on to www.NCBBA.org or www.OBPA.org to learn more.  Thank you for caring!

My husband and I love driving out on the beach every year. Its one of the main reasons why we go down there. Going to Orgen Inlet is a fun family outing for us. There will be a lot of lost buisness and tourist if this was to happen.

"This injunction will prohibit any access at all - by foot or vehicle - year-round to the most beautiful parts of the island."

Good, maybe then the tourists will go somewhere else.

Best possible solution? Buy out all the landowners, grandfather in the ones that are currently there, and when they die out, bulldoze everything, get the people off the banks and turn it back into the pristine wilderness that it should have remained from the start.

Just my $0.02

It's amazing that saving the environment is seen by the short-sighted as crazy. They won't know what they had till it's gone.

Thank you for your comments everyone... Let me add that this is not only an Off Road Vehicle issue. This injunction will prohibit any access at all - by foot or vehicle - year-round to the most beautiful parts of the island.

These are the same environmentalist whackos who oppose the new energy plant in western NC. If they had their way we'd still be using candles and horses and buggies.

I have been going to Hatteras since the 80's and I'm tired of seeing more and more trash on the beach. If people would stop the attitude of "the world is my trash can" I would be more supportive.

Where's the bad, exactly?

Group wants to close remote areas of Hatteras. Okay, why is that bad? If it protects the beaches and wildlife, why is it bad? The tourists obviously cannot control themselves.

I used to go to the Outer Banks every summer when I was young. The last time I went was in 2001, I think. It has changed, and that is sad.

Maybe allow access to remote areas ONLY if one has a card that proves that one is a year-round resident?

I have no answers, and I'm not sure what you're looking for.

I have family on Ocracoke, and when I go to visit,I have seen people emptying ashtrays on their soil!I full well understand why they want this!

I've been visiting the Outer Banks for over 40 years and in that time I have seen what was once a beautiful beach become a busy roadway and the lower beach become a parking lot covered with litter. I've also seen the size and power of the vehicles used on the beach increase and the ruts and dune damage increase. If the villages are happy with traffic on the beaches and are concerned with a loss of tourist dollars, then confine this activity there. Leave the other areas free of traffic so that those of us who don't want to spend our time and money to visit a sandy parking lot or dodge speeding trucks and SUVs have a place to enjoy.

My first time in Hatteras was in 1975, when I first came to the states. Went back every summer since. I do not go any more because of all the poeple that have gathered on to the beaches. Mauling everything, having a 'good time'. I have always been very respectful to the land as for so many have not. This is another case of so many idiots screw it up for the good fokes.
