coupon organization

Published Mar. 31, 2008

I love coupons. I hate paying full price for anything. Thanks to harris teeter and triple coupons last week, I got over $200 worth of groceries for $72.19.

Yes, there are those who are much better than me, but I do what I can!

One of the keys to using coupons effectively is organizing them. If you don't know what coupons you have, how are you going to use them? I used to use ziplocks and envelopes- but even that proved tedious.  After seeing my friends coupon binder (what a fantastic idea!) I decided to do the same.

It takes some time to get it initially set up, but once you do, maintaining it is pretty easy!

you will need :

3 ring binder

20 or so notebook dividers

clear plastic divided sleeves (I use a combination of baseball card sleeves, business card holder sleeves and 4x6 photo sleeves. All of these are inexpensive and come with the holes to stick it in your binder!

coupons!

Now I have mine set up to mimic the aisles in the grocery store I most often frequent- which is Food Lion- but you set yours up however it will work best for you. The aisle method works for me because I don't have to flip back and forth between sections- just turn the page for the next aisle.

The binder fits well on the shopping cart seat (except for HArris Teeter, their seats are smaller)

Then, keep an eye on the sales flyers for the stores (Krogers always has double coupons). After awhile you will learn what is a good deal with your coupons and what is not. Don't buy something JUST because you have a coupon (unless it turns out free, which happens quite a bit once you learn how to use those coupons!)

you people are my nightmares in the grocery store. LOL

Boy,you said the truth on that one LadyBlue.Esp.if they have kids with them too.

you people are my nightmares in the grocery store. LOL

Thanks! I love using coupons too. I can remember getting complimented by a store manager once for being so "organized" with my 2 babies in tow. But I've fallen off my game. You've inspired me to get back on track.

wow. thank you for the tips on organizing coupons. I used to bargain shop before I got married over 5 years ago. Now that I am a single mom, I got to get my game plan back in place.

At most Walmarts, you can use your cupons, weather you buy the item or not. The store will get the money back once they send the cupon in any way. So unless you get a goofy cashier, use all the cupons you want.

I love to coupon shop. I always save a lot on my bills when I take the time to use them. I tend to go over my list and my coupons the night before I go shop so I have what I want to use in an envelope already. Then I just take my coupon binder w/me in case I see something I want when I am there. I did take advantage of triple coupons at HT last weekend. I don't always catch that but when I do I am always glad!

I've been to moss's ( I live in franklinton) but everytime I have gone (and its been a couple of years now) its soooo dirty.

I couldn't get over the cleanliness issue. :(

I don't mind driving to shop. I go to Mosses sometimes which is in Louisburg. I also shop at Randy's supermarket. I have found that shopping in bulk to me sometimes helps so I shop at Sam's once in a while. BJ's warehouse to me does not have many deals and the best thing for Costco is the cakes which I rarely eat so it is no use in me going there unless I am throwing a birthday party and need a cake from there. Also, talk to your friends about deals. Get them to pick up stuff you like that is on sale and pay them when you get the food. Rainchecks don't always work. Trust me...I know. I don't want a comparable item...I want the item I WANT.

To me, the problem with coupons is not organizing them, but taking the time to look through papers & reading & clipping them. I only get the N & O Fri-Sun, so don't know what's usually on sale, except for flyers in the mail from Food Lion & Lowe's Foods. And, it seems to me, too, that all the things offered on coupons are not what I need. I don't buy much of what I call junk - candy, stuff for kids, all the extras you can spend money on - that's what's on coupons.

I even took one of the classes on couponing by the lady in Clayton (can't remember her name just now) & bought the organized binder stuff. I still had a time problem in keeping up with all of it & quit. After weeks of couponing, I never saw any triple coupon ads; the one at Lowe's came out AFTER I quit & my coupons were outdated!!!! Working a full-time job & running 2 businesses from home does not leave a lot of time for couponing. I opt for BOGOS & store brands & sales when I see them.

I love using coupons! I just used one for Sundown vitamins for $2.00 off, and that was a bargain considering vitamins can get expensive. Mostly I look for coupons for cat food, kitty litter, toothpaste, sometimes canned goods. Only two of us, so I could probably never get really good savings like $200 of groceries for $50. If I can't use a coupon, I often put it on the shelf with the item. I once had a coupon for Enfamil, buy one get one free, which I couldn't use, so as I shopped I looked for customers with babies. I offered it to one woman, who seemed surprized but was very grateful to save $12.00 on formula. My divided coupon wallet serves me pretty well, but I slip up occasionally. Then I kick myself for losing money!
