As Chip makes his way toward Mt. Everest, he has already started communicating to Martin students. Recent updates included pictures, and short reports of what he has done so far. Here is a short interview i conducted with a student from Martin Middle School
How has the Mt. Everest project affected you so far?
If affected me because everyone's really excited, and we really want to get involved. Were doing stuff like reading books on Everest, and class activities.
Q:Tell me something that you learned about Mt. Everest through this project.
A:Climbers have to acclimatize before summiting, or else they will not be able to get enough oxygen.
Q:How would you react if one of your friends/family attempted to climb Everest?
A:I would be scared since climbing Everest is really dangerous and they might not survive, but I would be really proud of them.
Q:If you could ask Chip a question about his journey so far, what would it be?
A:What new insights have you gained about other cultures
Martin is also on a roll with its Read to the Top program. As said earlier, students read articles or books on mountain climbing, Mt. Everest, or other related topics. They then fill out cards on what they read and learned. Homerooms gradually move from the base camp of Mt. Everest to the Summit. As of right now, a seventh grade homeroom is in the lead. Can't wait to see who reaches the top first!

As for acclimatizing, I’ve read where some climber who go up without oxygen take months to do that.
Look at all the preparation taken just to get to the mountain, which is nothing to the attention to detail taken for the climb itself. The enemies are the mountain, the weather, the cold, the wind, the storm, the ice and lack of oxygen as they climb higher and higher, but the thing each climber concentrates hardest on is within hirself. They conquer fear, fatique, and the boredom that would rob them of careful actions. They keep strong their muscles, concentration, perseverance, & focus. I’m telling you all, I would be turning around, coming down at the first danger, first obstacle…what am I saying, I wouldn’t even go over there and try. There’s something in Chris that isn’t in me, something that makes him dream of c
