house: a few more windows
Published Mar 21, 2008Views: 491
Coming right along.
We were able to get some more windows installed this week. I told my husband that I think he was trying to tease me. Every time we'd be at the house working, he wanted to install the windows anywhere BUT on the front of the house. I was getting antsy to see the upstairs windows in place so I could get a feel for how the house was going to look. FINALLY we started working on those front windows.
As luck would have it, we ran out of some supplies and couldn't get that center window in place. Oh well. We'll get it eventually.
If you can imagine it, there will be an oval window on the left side, centered on that portion of porch. There will be a door on the right, leading onto that portion of porch. Our front door will have an oval glass to balance the oval window.
We are still teetering with siding - hardiplank vs. vinyl. We are meeting with a siding rep in about a week to discuss vinyl.
We're also trying to decide rails and pickets for the front porch. Neither of us really care for pickets. We rather just install posts and leave the porch bare, but code does not allow. We are thinking about 6" square posts w/iron work between. Of course, we'll have to compare costs for that. It could be too expensive. We may end up with pickets afterall.
The concrete on our porch is already breaking up. I think there was something added to the mix to keep it from freezing when it was poured. We have a huge crack right in front of the door and it's getting worse. There are many hairline cracks and spider-webbings that indicate future cracks. We may have to have most of it re-poured. UGH! We'll be meeting with our concrete guy soon to discuss options/plans.
We have met with our heating/air rep. I think we're on the right track there. Our cost will be a tad higher than we had planned, but all in all, not too bad. He told us that we'd have to vent the fireplace in the bedroom out (can't use vent-free in a bedroom). Hadn't planned on that, but that's OK, though I can't imagine ever leaving a fire buring while I'm sleeping. Yikes!
Well, that's about it for now.

We are doing gas logs in the MBR as well as the living room. We wanted vent-free gas logs, but we found out they HAVE to be vented in a bedroom. So, I guess we'll be venting.
Re: the porch. We have an open crawl space under the porch. We had to install a steel base for the porch. After our faux pas with the footings/foundation, I dare say that won't be moving. It was very cold when the porch was poured and I think they add something to the mixture (calcium?) to keep it from setting too quickly. If they add too much, it causes the concrete to be very brittle. I think that's what's happened. I'll try to post a pic showing the cracks.
Strawberry, I can't wait to bring my horses home. I visited them yesterday and Thunder (on my profile page) just stood there with his head over my shoulder, pulling me in. He's such a sweetie.
