curious about playing outside

My son and I have had this debate all during his spring break:  He thinks he's old enough to play outside without me being outside with him.  He's 8 years old.  We live right next to my parents and there are no other houses near ours.  There's about 100 feet of grass where he has all his play things between the houses.  I don't let him outside without an adult no matter where we are...but when does that stop?  I've been thinking around 10 or so and that's what I've told him.  I'm really curious what you all think about it.  When I was little, my parents kicked us outside and we never came in until dark.  We played in the woods, at other people's houses, in the creek, but things are so much different now.  What are your feelings on this subject?

The neighborhood has a lot to do with it...proximity to the street or highway...is the backyard fenced in...is there an "attractive nuisance" like a swimming pool nearby he could wander to...is he alobne or will he have playmates....can you hear him during his playtime in case he cries out...so many variables. Our boys played together out int he back yard while the youngest was still in diapers, but we're pretty isolated and as long as the critters didn't come out of the woods for a quick meal, they were pretty much alright by themselves.

We live 1 street off of the "main road", but have a 4 lane hwy a block away from there. We let our 8 1/2 and 5 1/2 yr old girls play outside by themselves or with friends. They don't go very far at all. They ride bikes right around out front of the house, play in the driveway, or in the front yard. If they go any farther, they know that they need to let us know where they are going on get a walkie talkie so that they are in contact with us. They have to let us know if they change where they are at too. They usually stick to our house though. We let them go out in the fenced back yard by themselves too. Now, anytime they go outside, there is a window open so that we can hear what is going on out there. If the 2 1/2 year old wants to go outback, he can if the girls are out there, but if he wants to go out front, an adult has to be out there too. Other parents in the neighborhood let their kids roam the neighborhood, but not any of mine. I don't think the world is safe anymore for that!

One thing about not letting your child run wild is that they don't pick up those bad habits from the other kids. I let my 10 y/o outside alone, but I have to be able to step out the front door and see him at anytime. I also have a set of those FRS radios that he carries with them. They have a range of a mile, so he is always within range. (Those are wonderful devices when it's time for him to come home!)

USAF - you have too many children....i got sugically tied after 2 - 7 kids is crazy!!!!!!!! dontjudgeme Crazy?? YESS and I love it!! 3 are grown and out trying to make a difference and the others are at home.

Thanks JokersWild, thank goodness we were able to give him the experience of growing up on a farm. He can drive the tractor with his dad or my dad, he cleans stalls and feeds/grooms the horses. When he grows up, he wants to own the farm. But he also wants to be an engineer. He's always been quite good at building things, even from a very very young age.

Clip those wings a little at a time. You can't do it all at once. 8years old and can't go outside by himself!!!!! I had my kids doing outside chores at that gae.Girl you might wanna get checked out!..........lol

I agree that you will have to do a risk assesment and go with whatever makes you feel comfortable. As you said you were basically kicked outside and expected to spend most of the day out.. I was raised the same way on a farm and heck I can remember DRIVING tractors when i was as young as 7 and 8 years old.. Things are ALOT different now, so I would just go with your gut feeling and study how well your son does on his own. You could start by giving him a little lead way like being outside for a few minutes alone, and then gradually increase the time he is alone until you see that he is acting responsibly and is aware of his surroundings. If he is oblivious to his surroundings and could care less that a strange man is approaching him, I wouldnt let him out of my sight for even 20 seconds..

true beaver - i would take my 22 out with us in the woods and not thinking anything of it - I had a "rambo" knife that I took everywhere with me......matches and all!

Things realy are not that different. Children are just dummer than we were. I guess it's our fault some how. But I am 32, and I too stayed outside alone, or with other kids, from as far back as I can remember. We also played in the woods, in the creeks, by the age of 11 we were carying a rifle with us, to kill critters, kids these days would drown, shoot someone or themselves, get hit by cars, start using drugs, you name it! It must be our fault
