When this movie first came out, I was much younger, we were a freshly blended yours/mine/ours family, newly arrived in central California. I wanted so badly to see this movie while it was still playing on the theatre that we passed on our shopping trips to "civilization", but there just wasn't any movie ticket money in the family budget. So I did the better thing..I read the book. Looking back maybe it was more of an "adult" book than I should have been reading as a eighth grader, but it was "adult" in a different sense of the word than we use today. It dealt with themes of death, love, revolution...set against a beautiful natural backdrop. It'd been years since I watched this movie and tonight at the local cd/dvd store I spied a copy of it. I'd been looking for something completely different but this movie on dvd has been one of those latent desires, lurking just underneath the surface, but never really popping out cause I hate like heck to spring full price for a new dvd. Been looking thru the stacks for quite a while in the hopes a used copy would turn up and I'd spring on it like a cat on a mouse. But I couldn't delay my acquisition any longer..I pulled the old trusty BB&T debit card and coughed up new price for it...with my Sam Goody discount , but of course.
So tonight I again listen to the balalaika and the fantastic soundtrack all throughout the movie...I'm carried back to when I first saw this movie. If you've never seen Dr. Zhivago, this is one of those "classics" you really ought to settle down and watch. If you have already seen it, then you know I need to get back and see Yuri as he inevitably falls in love with Lara. They just don't make epic movies like this anymore. What a shame.
