dst - 'disputing saving time'?

Published Mar. 9, 2008

This will put some kids out standing in the dark waiting on the bus won't it. I go with kids needs over adults wants any day.

"This will put some kids out standing in the dark waiting on the bus won't it."

Yes. Are we now a nation scared of the dark?

steve - That's my point. I just used a lot less words. ;)

Interestingly, time is an artificial construct to begin with that only approximates celestial motions. In other words, time is what we say it is. We could just as easily have ten hour days, one hundred minutes in an hour, equal length months, or any other number of methods of marking the passage of events.

I mean, just what is so sacred about the standard shift work hours of 7-3, 3-11, and 11-7? They are completely arbitrary and stem from cultural influences without any influence from the actual "time" of events. Who says that lunch is from 12-1? If you eat breakfast at 8 am, then lunch is four hours later, but dinner is at 6 so there is a five hour wait between those two meals. Why does the office workday end at 5? What makes 11 pm so special as a general bedtime? Why is August summer? You'd be freezing in August in the southern hemisphere.

It's all relative and arbitrary anyway.

" Why can't we just move the clocks ahead 30 minutes and leave it year round? "

now why can't the gov think like this...this make sense...right ? i liked it anyway

Surprisingly, where my dad grew up in Lenoir, there was absolutely nothing to do by today's measures. Yet I would trade large portions his childhood for mine anyday. Yes, growing up in northern New Jersey gave me amazing access to the cultural events of NYC as well as museums that only now the south is starting to emulate, but my dad learned two things (which fortunately he also taught to me.)

He learned patience even in solitude since his hometown was essentially a rural community with rather few neighbors. And he taught me imagination; the ability to dream and envision worlds unseen not only those under my feet (which led to a strong interest in science,) but also the world at large through reading.

One stark difference I remember was how we played Army. Up north, kids took army men and military vehicles, and had a melee without much direction or strategy. In the south, we build dirt mounds and constructed entire battle scenes, playing them out as if it were a true simulation.

I love daylight savings time because I like the longer days. I take my son to school every morning and have pretty much done so since he started school...in middle school he rode the bus more but I learned early not to leave the house until I knew he was on the bus. (That's a whole other story). That is just my story though not a judgment call.

Why can't we just move the clocks ahead 30 minutes and leave it year round?

I hate DST.

All I've got to say is, "Stop running school bus stop signs!!!"

My dad was from western NC. My mom was from NYC. I grew up in the north, spent eight to ten weeks per year in the south, and came below the Mason-Dixon line permenently as soon as I had the option to do so -- like the day after I graduated high school.

I grew up in the best of both worlds with the advantages of each.

Oops. Skip that question about "up west," Steve. You were answering while I typed. I thought you came from western NC, but I was off by a tad.
